I love this make believe world. Does anyone in that audience ever think this car is really a Camaro with anything to do with the one at the local chevy dealer?
Just like Nascar, and too many other areas, this is completely meaningless to what you buy in a showroom. Racing may improve the breed, but not in this case.
Those 4 Camaros compete in "Pro Stock" not "Funny Car". Don't blame GM for the look of the cars. Blame the NHRA. I don't understand why the top "Stock" class doesn't require stock chassis, body panels and drivetrain. Only safety regulated equipment should be allowed.
Well, if they used stock cars again the costs are actually higher than building them from the ground up to run 6 second 1/4 mile runs. Then, if you made them stock who would pay NHRA money to go watch 9-10 second 1/4 mile N/A runs? Yea, no one.
Plus, GM does actually make the engines for the teams.
Outrageously good article on Pro Stock here. I read it last year and my brain still hurts. lol
At the speeds these cars are going, stock bodied cars are a liability. These cars are built for speed and safety, so they are full tube frame cars. They need to be or more drivers would die.
If I remember correctly, Pro Stock retained a connection to stock bodies into the early 90s... now they are just different decals on the same aero-optimized bodies, just like NASCAR.
