Wheels 2011 "Car of the Year"

    WHEELS COTY 2011: HONDA CR-Z
    JOHN CAREY Wheels online

It’s a hybrid with spirit, and the 2011 Wheels Car of the Year.

Expertly engineered, impressively efficient, and with strong safety credentials, the Honda CR-Z is also a genuine joy to drive. The little petrol-electric coupe may not be blindingly quick, but it is eye-openingly agile. Endowed with the kind of handling and steering that invites involvement, the Honda puts a smile on the face of any driver who accepts the invitation. And this, it hardly need be said, is a first for a hybrid…

It’s hard to dispute the Honda’s efficiency, nor the excellent safety credentials. Equipped standard with six airbags, the Honda already had an Australian NCAP five-star safety rating in the bag at launch.

This surprised me. I thought that the CR-Z got shocking reviews when released in other markets. Has it been updated?

Exactly, they picked a "fluffy rabbit" that few people will be buying.

Puh-lease. Typical Wheels car of the year...

Politically correct but in reality an uninspiring vehicle that no-one really wants to drive, except those people who leave the fuel consumption sticker on their windscreen to remind themselves why they compromised in the first place.

It's up there with the Camira, Wheels.

It most likely fit the criteria for a car of teh year gong - must be very little new stuff on the market worthy this year

Are you kidding! I thought this car would come last of the 6 finalists which were the Range Rover Evoque, Ford Focus, Skoda Yeti, Audi A6 and VW Sciroco (token VW much). My money was on the Range Rover.

I've only heard bad things about this car, I'm very surprised that it would win any award. Sounds like it tries to do many things, and doesn't do any one thing very well.

lol @ the "token VW". Honestly, I thought anything remotely related the Golf would win.

As for the winner, I was pretty sure they thought it was ordinary on its first outing.

<edit> Just checked a bunch of reviews and they were all talking about how it was good for a Hybrid. Not sure how that translates to COTY. Less than a second faster than the Prius to the ton and 20% thirstier? All the practicality of a shoe box? I just don't getter. I take a Camry Hybrid over the CR-Z (at least it's built locally).
