    Victoria Police Choose BMW

    news.com.au

VICTORIA Police Highway Patrol will replace their Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore V8 pursuit cars with a fleet of turbo diesel BMW 5 Series sedans from next year.
With the end of local production of the Falcon last year — and the Commodore reaching the end of the line next month — police divisions across Australia have had to source specialised foreign cars for the highway patrol.
Police in NSW and other states are understood to be on the verge of confirming they will follow suit, as BMW is one of the few car manufacturers globally to make vehicles specifically for police work.
Police in Germany, Italy and the UK also use BMW sedans for highway patrol duties.

So will the coppers become pricks after driving Bimmahz for a while?

I don't know what the fleet pricing for the Holden cop cars is but does anyone truly believe they will be cheaper than an imported 5 series that's about twice the price of any Holden?

    I don't

    I don't
Bottom line is Holden and Ford haven't given a viable option - Mustang has too few doors and they probably wont have time to evaluate an Insignadore.

I believe the FORD/Holden coppers were LEASED not bought so it would not be unreasonable for BMW to offer "special" pricing/rates/HIGH residual to push the numbers into the SAME range as the domestic offerings as unlike FORD/HOLDEN BMW MAY actually WANT the COP BUSINESS much like MB WANTS to be the VAN BRAND of choice now the FORD ECONOLINE is DEAD in Canada

If the BMW deal is similar with their UK police deal, the cars will be leased on a full-maintenance basis - no different contractually to their use of Ford and Vauxhalls in the past.

    Re: Victoria Police Choose BMW

Are you guys trending to SUVs or is it sedan police cars, period?

I did a comparo with Bimmah5 sedan, Taurus, Cadenza (Police Package coming soon!), and Soul Turbo!. The BMW doesn't have massive interior space. Our cops wear so much battle rattle that I can understand why an SUV is where they're going. Ditto the easy access front and rear, and the increasing percentage of lard per perp.

Now, as a Soul fanboiz (well, not rilly, but it's a fun word to use) I think it would make a great city cop car. Turbo power, quick turn agility, easy access to shove alleged perps' craniums into the guest compartment in back, equal or superior leg, foot, head room. Width is the only downside.

Highway patrol has always been sedans but SUVs as divisional vehicles are more common these days. Originally Ford Territorys were popular and Landcruisers are used in country areas.

Aussie cops seem to be less weighed down by bodywear than US cops. Commodores and Falcons have standard interiors with a basically normal console and they seem to fit OK. Maybe Aussie cops are thinner than American cops ??

LOL. That was a question begging to be asked, and answered. 'murricans ARE getting larger. Taller heavier and more illiterate. It's all weighty.

I only post this because Heather (she is the lighter skinned one) used to be my next door neighbour and she is now one of Victoria Police's poster girls (and features in the local version of 'Highway Patrol' on TV.
