    Q about Mopar in Oz

Was just talking about the Dodge Dart/Pheonix and I thought they were built in Canadia for export to Oz in 1960-62ish, but Wikipedia says we were building them at Tonsley park by then.

    Anyone know any more?

    Thanks gents

Tonsley Park didn't get finished until 1963 I think. The R series was assembled at Mile End so maybe they did CKD Phoenix there. I don't remember seeing any labelled as Darts in my youth because I think Darts had the engines larger than the 318 a Phoenix had, but I am not sure. Our Phoenix was the same body as a Dodge Dart Phoenix until mid sixties when it was the same body as a four door Plymouth Fury. My Dad had an AP1 Chrysler then a VC Valiant (which we won by the way).

Once upon a time and long ago I had a series of Microsoft computers (never again) and saved inside one of them was a couple of AU online-museum historical pics I had found - one showing a batch of 1957 (or '58, can't remember?) Dodge Custom Royals, and the other a 1960 Dodge Phoenix, and both photographs were of new vehicles literally on Chrysler's production line in South Australia.

The cars were RHD (of course) assembled ex-CKD for sure and likewise I guess Canadian-sourced.

Circa 1980 a mate of mine got around in a red/white & roughish '57 Custom Royal Coupe 361 which i drove many times, it was a beast!

There were even Plymouths Cranbrooks and DeSoto Firesweeps built in Adelaide, in the fifties, from CKDs but not at Tonsley. I know Mile End was one location but I think they had a couple of others which my old brain is having trouble remembering.

If I was a Holden I would be an HR (65 - 67) thanks very much.

I've found it hard to find out what non-Holden GM cars were assembled here, let alone which Mitsubishis were built here.

As a kid I rarely saw anything other than Kingswoods, Falcons and Valiants so the others did not really interest me.

We had an AP1 Chrysler and I had been told that the CKD came from Canada (probably to do with import duties as it is Commowealth country I assume).

Well done china and wouldn't Oz be poorer without Mr Sievers.

The curve in that line is the exact same spot as the pic I had of the Custom Royals, but with different cars shown.

I'm more confident 'my' pic was of 1957 vehicles.

Btw I once owned a black AP3, a surprisingly good vehicle I thought.

The NLA has a lot of photos (over 13,000) by Mr Wolfgang Sievers and they are fascinating as they show lots of industrial things which are not usually seen. I know of the photo you mean I just can't find it. Maybe it isn't in the NLA collection - I will keep looking.
