    GM to scrap Holden brand

General Motors has said it will retire the iconic Australian car brand Holden as it leaves more markets.

The American car giant said it will wind down Holden sales, design and engineering operations in Australia and New Zealand by next year.

This really is the saddest car news I've heard, words are failing me.

    RIP, Holden - RIP, GM

    Not surprising.
They have systematically screwed over their dealer network and destroyed any loyalty they had left in the local markets over the last few years...

IMHO this is LONG TIME IN THE MAKING ever since GM America went BK and was "saved" and signed its LOYALTY to WALL ST
other then the MID ENGINE Vette GM globally has done NOTHING BUT PUNT
NAME a SINGLE TOP SHELF product post BK ANYWHERE in the world
VF was a "warmed over" VE and was TOO LATE TO THE MARKET
the Malibu was "kneecapped" from birth with pricing and trim layout
MOST of CADDIES line up suffered with "will fit" power trains and WORSE lack of ANY SUVS for years
Buick lived on the DREGS of GM global ONLY to sell in CHINA
the ONLY INNOVATION in the top selling segment is being held back for a BRAND that sell 10% the volume of the sister brand and even then is being "saved" for the UBER LUX trim guaranteeing it will fail (multi pro tailgate)

It seems we've sort of seen this coming. Still though an unwanted effect of GM and their past and sad at any rate..

John Crennan was a Holden giant and knew what went on there better than just about anybody. Interesting to hear his thoughts on Holden's last decade or so.

I saw report that says the Lang Lang test track has been sold to the Vietnamese Vinfast. It will still be available for HSV's replacement to use. It appears VinFast have also taken over the GM South Korea factory. Their vehicles will be based on older BMWs (under licence).

That's going full cycle for GM South Korea - as Daewoo they used to build previous generation Opels under licence - they could have dominated the budget-brand market as Hyundai/Kia moved up market, but GM tried to rebadge them as Chevrolets and increase prices up to Opel/Vauxhall levels - the strategy failed.

Put it differently - more shrinkage in GM's "global" aspirations - that's Saab, Opel, Vauxhall, Holden, now Daewoo, all gone - plus of course Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn and Geo.

GM's definition of "global" is China splashed with weak presence in the States.

That's actually an improvement compared to the usual US use of the word - at least now it covers 2 countries.

When Americans sang “We are the world” they meant it literally. How else would they have the World Series contained entirely within the US [plus maybe Canada].
