VFACTS: 2019 new car sales results

    Mike Costello
    Caradvice.com.au

    06 January 2020

Car sales tumble to 2011 levels; industry cites lending reforms, wage growth, housing market, drought as factors

Australia’s 2019 new car sales tally finished up almost 8 per cent down on the previous year, making it the worst since 2011.

Self-reported Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data counted 1,062,867 new vehicles sold. That is more than 90,000 fewer than 2018’s tally.

Each state and territory went backwards, by a minimum of 2.3 per cent (Tasmania) to 16 per cent (Northern Territory). Buyers in New South Wales and Victoria, combined, purchased 60,000 fewer new cars than they did in 2018.

The data shows that SUVs accounted for 45.5 per cent market share, up from 43 per cent in 2018. Passenger cars managed 29.7 per cent share, and light commercials 21.2 per cent.

    Brands
Toyota topped the charts with 205,766 sales for the year, down 5.2 per cent. Mazda fell by 12.3 per cent but hung on to second place with 97,619 cars counted as sold. Hyundai scraped into third with 86,104 sales, despite volumes falling by 8.6 per cent.

Mitsubishi fell by ‘only’ 2 per cent for a fourth-placed total of 83,250, well ahead of Ford (63,303, down 8.4 per cent), Kia (61,503, up 4.6 per cent), Nissan (50,575, down 12.3 per cent), Volkswagen (49,928, down 11.8 per cent), and Honda (43,868, down 14.9 per cent).

Holden hung onto the final spot inside the top 10 with 43,176 sales, despite falling a massive 28.9 per cent. It edged out Subaru, whose distributor recorded a sales dip of 20 per cent to 40,007.

    Down Down market is down

Thought it was a coles ad

Is Mitsubishi making any money? They're on perpetual discount

Kia is doing great I would buy one of their SUV's if that was my thing

Other than that they sell nothing that I fancy

Ford is in danger of falling into the "one trick pony" camp , If Ranger doesn't continue to sell they fall down past Holden based on their current trends

NOthing is going to tackle Toyota they just have a stranglehold of the market

Gees imagine how bad it would have been without the odd natural disaster or two which forced people to replace their vehicles.

I went past a taxi rank yesterday. 7 Camrys and nothing else. I did see one Falcon circulating though.

I still think they need more wagons. For me, the consideration of the family car relies on practicality. The sedan is always going to lose that argument against an SUV. At least wagons get past that first hurdle and can counter with economy, handling and lower running costs, if not the automotive trend status quo.

Having said all of that, Skoda has a great wagon and it's not exactly setting the charts on fire.

Ranger is a one trick pony, it just happens to be a damned good one that gets decent sales even with absurd mark up. Ranger is Ford's second most profitable vehicle behind F Series.

Ranger is less than two years away from next gen, so probably going to be a little subdued in 2020 and most of 2021.

I'm sorry but unless GM sprinkles a bit of love on Holden, noting changes.

There's certainly no good news for Holden this year. Final Astra allocations given to dealers yesterday and minimal ZB stock left to sell.

Leaves us with Trax, which is still in short supply after the GM Korea strike action, Colorado and Trailblazer that are aging with no replacement in sight and unpopular Acadia and Equinox which we can't give away....

The only confirmed new model coming is Corvette, but that's likely to be next year and will only sell in very small numbers.

I predict circa 30,000 units for Holden this year and firmly outside the top 10.

from over here it looks like ONLY H/K and Toyota have a "full lineup" that is selling in good numbers - everybody else has one or two tricks and that is it with FORD being the worst offender and Holden NOT even having ONE "pony"

Astra production concluded before Christmas. Majority of remaining ZB production is fleet (police?), but the runout numbers are already finalised. Buick production ended in December, so no component pipeline swapping between the two anymore. So you basically get what's there.

Holden is truly f/d. A ex-Holden colleague of mine spoke to someone from Holden HQ recently, and they reckon that the knives are already out, and the company will shrink even faster this year. Nobody mentions GM closing the place down this year, but nobody is denying such possibility either. Although the HQ management are somewhat deluded, still saying that it takes a while to turn around a big ship, and all that, not realising that Holden is more dinghy-sized these days. And, as usual, blaming all dealers for Holden's underperformance.

I feel sorry for the dealers. It's like watching a huge avoidable car crash in slow motion.

Re: Corvette being confirmed - I'm old enough to remember Cadillac, Holden Vivaro and Zafira B being "confirmed" with physical product already in the country. It didn't end very well.

So 30K volume you reckon? How many dealers left by the end of this year?

    PS
Years ago Denny Mooney said in a meeting that he wanted Holden to be more like Nokia. If he only knew...

Aussies really are having a tough time at the moment really feel for them every thing seems to be going tits up the economy, fires and the Commodore & Falcon are gone, is nothing lefts that sacred that just seems so wrong now the two Aussie designed classics are gone, even the hardy tough durable car based UTE's to sell very well.

I am totally pissed off with whats happened in Australia.

I don't mind them even if they are a bit boring. At least they don't have goofy fronts like Japanese cars seem to have.
