One of the oddest-looking vehicles on display at Toyota’s Tokyo Motor Show booth will be the JPN Taxi Concept, which previews a next-generation taxi for the Japanese market. Toyota says the study was developed with Japanese hospitality in mind, offering ease of ingress and egress and a comfortable interior size in a compact body.

The JPN Taxi Concept measures 4,350 mm (171 inches) in length, 1,695 mm (66.7 inches) in width and 1,700 mm (67 inches) in height and has a wheelbase of 2,750 mm (108.2 inches), offering space for five passengers.

The concept features large electrically operated doors and a low, flat floor that ease access for passengers, particularly for children and seniors. Toyota says the open, roomy interior has been designed “to ensure ease-of-use at all times.”

Why were New York taxis supposed to be Nissans again?

Because the Nissans were designed to be wheelchair roll-in capable. Result: enormous, inefficient (bloated and ugly to boot) vehicles that are expensive to buy and feed.

For the tiny number of wheelchair users (0.5% of the population, per U Cal San Francisco - http://dsc.ucsf.edu/publication.php), that's great. For the operators and NY residents, not so grand.

The best taxi ever is the little Scion xB - more room in the back than a Crown Vic, but small enough not to block traffic and very economical to operate. Cabbies in Chicago, at least, love 'em. No need for a tarted up fake London cab. The solution is already in production and it's cheap to boot.

I like it. Sure it reminds us of the London Taxis, but that's fine. This concept looks purposeful.

To me it looks like a Scion Xb and an AMC Pacer spent some quality time together. It does look like it would fulfill its purpose of moving people quite well.

What's the deal with Japanese cars having the outside mirrors mounted way out on the fenders? What does that do for you?

It is supposed to be easier to get rid of the blind spots with them mounted there but people generally have no clue how to set up mirrors anyway.
