    Shanghai 2013: Suzuki Authentics Concept

New Suzuki Authentics Concepts for a Compact Sedan Debuts in Shanghai
    APRIL 20, 2013
    Carscoops

As Suzuki withdraws its automotive products from the two most important markets in North America, the U.S. and Canada, the Japanese company is placing more attention to other regions such as China, where it revealed a new concept car at the Shanghai Auto Show.

The Authentics is a four-door study for the most popular category in China, the C-segment (compact) sedan class with entries like the VW Lavida and Ford Focus.

This is the kind of car that would have gained them market share.

Is this on a GM-based platform? I see a lot of Buick Regal in those lines...

Wow, that's a smashing good design with a nice color to match! Unreal they decided to exit the North American market before introducing something like this. (Even though I don't know how it drives.)

Obviously this proves they didn't try hard enough in North America - if this style makes it anywhere near production OR they gave up a year or 2 too early.

The Kizashi was their first vehicle to showcase the new direction.

Won't the Kizashi be somewhat close to this car in terms of size? Anyhow, I hope it looks as close to this as it can when it hits production and is a great success. With some nice success they could return to the United States although I'm sure their current focus is on China and India (along with home market Japan).

Makes sense, then. It's really too bad they couldn't make a go of the Kizashi in the US, but I think the pricing and name were two issues.

Very nice design. It looks very BMW-esque to me, especially in the rear. They should have held out on exiting NA if this car will be equipped with relatively modern tech and is close in size to the Accord, Camry, etc. The mid-size family hauler status with AWD and a winning design would have definitely gotten more people to take notice that Suzuki was the real deal.

This is supposed to be smaller I guess. Even the Kizashi would have been better off competing with the Darts and Cruzes of the world rather than aiming for the Camcord crowd (at least it was in the US). They needed to lop about five grand from the base price to put it in line with, say, the Cruze. From there, a 1.8-2.0L with better gas mileage (keep the 2.4L for more premium trim levels) and probably a shuffling of standard content to justify the price decrease as well. Would've made a great player in that segment. Up against Accords, Sonatas, and Altimas, it was too small.

This Authentics should've been the car to move in that direction.

Re: Shanghai 2013: Suzuki Authentics Concept

new Suzuki Authentics concept, for example – we were told that this would, essentially, be a proper sedan version of the new SX4, but our folks on the ground in Shanghai tell us it's actually much larger. Like, bigger than the Kizashi.
the Authentics concept previews a C-segment vehicle for the Chinese market. A good move, too, since that segment has the highest volume in the Chinese market. (That's why automakers like Ford, for example, have more than one offering in the class.) If we're honest, the Authentics concept looks a bit "meh" for our tastes – there isn't a whole lot of emotion going on here with the design. Consider it a competitor for that spiffy new Ford Escort that also took the stage here in Shanghai.
