    NAIAS: 2013 Dodge Dart GT

    2013 Dodge Dart GT
    Autoblog
    January 8, 2013
    by Steven J. Ewing

...Building on the already well-equipped Limited model, the GT adds performance enhancements including a more powerful engine, 18-inch aluminum wheels, sport suspension calibration, unique front fascia and dual exhaust. Inside, you'll find perforated Nappa leather seats, a heated steering wheel and front seats, dual-zone climate control, remote start (if you spec the automatic transmission), Chrysler's 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen, a seven-inch TFT display in the gauge cluster, and a whole lot more. Optional goodies include hyper black aluminum wheels, a technology group (pushbutton start, keyless go, rain-sensing wipers, blind spot monitoring and smart-beam headlamps), power sunroof, Sirius radio, Garmin navigation, Alpine premium sound and high-intensity discharge headlamps.

Powering the Dart GT is Chrysler's 2.4-liter MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine producing 184 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. That grunt is sent to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission, but a six-speed automatic 'box is optional.

That's a whole lot of kit, and for a starting price of $20,995 (excluding destination charges), on the surface, the Dart GT strikes us as quite a bargain for the compact class. Look for production to start in the second quarter of 2013.

That's a good bit of equipment for a little over $21k, but it's the larger engine that should make this a nice alternative to like-priced competitors that still have their smaller standard engines for the same money. I admit I haven't liked the Dart quite as much as I thought I might after it debuted, but the GT makes it more interesting.

    You're kidding, right?

As nice as the Verano is -- it's just a tarted up Cruze at the end of the day.
The Dart Limited I test drove -- rides and handles a lot better than any Cruze or Verano that
    I've ever experienced.

The biggest gripe I have with the Dart was a lack of grunt from the currently available engines.
I'd imagine the 2.4 would fix that problem.

It's all probably Moot. I don't see Dart buyers cross shopping Veranos.... or vice versa.

As for the snooty Buick vibe.... Buick wishes they built a car as nice as the Dodge Charger.......

FFS, it is NOT a tarted up Cruze. They literally share NOTHING.They are two different cars built on the same platform.

I like the Dart and hopefully this will get so more off the showroom floor.

Meh, they need a true SRT4 successor to the Neon. The Dart has a most capable chassis, so it can readily deal with a theoretical 250 to 300hp SRT4 powerplant.

I find it sad that some people wish for GM to fail and can't comprehend any good news. A plausible explanation for this kind of behavior is that you have a miserable life so you wish the same to others. Cory Pham, Autoblog Poster

GM must return its divisions to being interdependent entities within the corporation. Decentralize and free the different divisions talents to foster brand differentiation and customer loyalty.

When will people learn that the Cruze and the Astra/Verano are two very separate cars with a few things in common. One was mainly engineered in Korea and the other was engineered in Germany.

I have not driven the Dart, but my experience with the Verano has been amazing.

If memory serves me it came out as a 1964 model when I was in fifth grade.

    Agreed.
    +200HP or GTFO
What is happening to the GM that grew up with for these many decades? If I could I would institute a hostile take over and kick the entire board and executives out and fill the positions with creative minds under the age of 35.

Can the Swinger be far behind?

And anyone claiming that the Verano is just a "tarted up Cruze" clearly hasn't driven either car.

And as nice as the Dart appears to be, I still wouldn't buy a Chrysler product out of fear of again getting stuck with agricultural build quality. I'd have to wait another few years to see if the improvements continue.

Re: NAIAS: 2013 Dodge Dart GT

    OK, two things.

    1) The hp/torque ratings do not count as 'grunt.' They aren't even close. maybe a sharp intake of breath ( the kind you get when you pull a hangnail) at the most.

    2) What happened to the days when they took a base model, slapped in a high HP engine, and called it a day? All the things added to this 'GT' ought to entice the ladies at the Junior League meetings, but adds nothing for the go-fast crowd.

Call it the la Femme and paint it pink.

    Fail.
