    LAIAS - 2019 Mazda 3 Debuts in LA

    New 2019 Mazda 3 is More Skyactiv-ated than Ever
    Mazda’s latest generation 3 comes with innovative Skyactiv-X engine, AWD as options
    Automobile

    By: Michael Floyd November 27, 2018

    LOS ANGELES, California — Mazda apparently didn’t get the memo that no one wants to buy compact cars in America anymore. To be fair, the new 2019 Mazda 3 has been designed as a global vehicle, so the U.S. market’s fickle nature when it comes to vehicles not called crossovers probably isn’t as big of a deal to the folks in Hiroshima. And Mazda already has a lineup of capable SUVs, including the CX-5, which we recently had in for a successful Four Seasons stint, so they’re in good shape there as well.

    From our perspective, we’re happy that Mazda has remained committed to offering the Mazda 3 here, the latest model of which is making its global debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show and is slated to hit U.S. streets in early 2019. It’s been a favorite of Automobile over the years thanks to its lively, fun-to-drive nature, and Mazda will continue to offer sedan and hatchback variants as well as traditional six-speed automatic and manual transmission options for the Mazda 3—big plusses in our book.
    ===================

    The New 2019 Mazda 3 Is Beautiful Inside and Out and Available with AWD
    Both the sedan and the hatchback have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder until the advanced Skyactiv-X engine arrives later next year.

    It seems that Mazda is pulling out all the stops with the 2019 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback. The latest-generation compact rides on a completely new platform, sports an attractive design inside and out, is newly available with all-wheel drive, and eventually will be offered with an advanced new engine technology called Skyactiv-X.

    Manual transmission? Check. AWD? Check. Finally an alternative to the Impreza! Oh yes I will test drive this when it's time for my next vehicle.

    Sorry GM/Ford/FCA, there is zero chance I will buy one of your crossovers. I get it that I'm in a minority...but I'm not alone either...

    Why invest in a dying segment. GM was smart to get out now with some dignity. It's going to be sad for MazDUH in the next few years when they see all the money go to waste on a new product that doesn't sell because the segment is dead and it looks like something a 4 year old drew.

    The problem is you and others like you are in a minority that offers little incentive to the automakers to cater to, especially when they make little to no profit off your preferred product.

    It sucks, but it is what it is. I know a couple people in the same boat as you, I guess buy while you still can.

    I honestly wonder in 5-6 years if these sedans that are launching this year will have future generations.

    Probably not and it's depressing as hell.

    Luxury sedans may stick around a little while longer though they still seem to have some sort of demand and aren't dropping nearly as fast as mainstream sedans.

    Exactly. Rather than get a product to market styled, priced, and equipped so that people really want it, they throw in the towel.

    Wow, those look good, especially that hatch. Mazda has been doing well lately, I've never paid much attention to them, but they're getting some attractive vehicles out there.

    Not to rain on your parade, but there are no guarantees that you will be able to load a 3 with the most powerful engine to the manual & AWD. But if they did offer it, .

    I've been reading your fanboy expulsions all day, but this is the funniest one yet. You fail to remember that Mazda doesn't sell the 3 only in America. They sell the same car in Japan (taxed based upon engine size) & Europe which are both small car strongholds. While the 3 may not sell enough to justify building for one market, they do sell enough around the globe to justify building them. Their money isn't going to waste. And don't forget that Mazda has already transitioned to a well-rounded crossover lineup, so I don't expect Mazda to go bankrupt, unlike a certain American auto manufacturer.

    Re: 2019 Mazda 3 Debuts in LA

    For a so called dying segment I see Compact cars all over the pace in San Diego. I used to see tons of Cruzen as well but since the re-design not so much. Over priced, de-contented, not made to be great just OK (par for the GM course), boring looks and start/stop that can't be shut off doomed it.
    So instead of doing better Barra pulls the plug. Ford and GM are embarrassments for this country. Americans fight, they don't retreat.
    I hope Trump rakes the both of them through the coals, especially GM which basically slapped every tax payer in the face by cutting so many American jobs after taking government money.

    Sedan looks great! Not so sure about the hatch. I do not like the rear windows on the hatchback at all.

    Re: 2019 Mazda 3 Debuts in LA

    Very nicely done. Mazda very obviously wants to become the Volvo of Japan and, frankly, I think that is a pretty solid plan. If they can't make their volume match their reality then change the reality to match the volume.

    As an aside, Mazda and Ford arguably would make a better pairing now than they ever did when they were in fact paired up. Mazda covers all the bases that Ford doesn't want to, and does it well, while Ford builds vehicles in segments Mazda could never even consider on their own and has a distribution network that is massively larger. That said, I don't lament the break-up from a real world perspective. The politics in their partnership were the business equivalent to the ninth circle of Hell as best as I understand it. It's just a shame that carmakers have such a difficult time putting petty issues aside when trying to work together on product. It always turns into a 'mine is bigger than yours' scenario.

    Re: LAIAS - 2019 Mazda 3 Debuts in LA

    Mazdas are my favorite Japanese brand. I think their designs are superb.

    Yet, sales of the Mazda 3 have been declining in the US;

    2016: 95K

    2017: 75K

    2018 (10 months) 55K

    So little more than half of sales 2 years ago.
