Lightweight and low drag are hallmarks of great sportscar design. But when paired with a super-efficient, hybrid powertrain, you have the Volkswagen's XL1 that has been formally introduced in Geneva today.

When the 1,700-lb, carbon-fiber-bodied two-seater hits the road, its claimed 261 miles per gallon will make it the world's most-fuel-efficient production car. Though "production car" might be a stretch since VW said in a February press release that the XL1 would be built using "handcrafting-like production methods." We translate that to mean you won't be seeing many of these cars on the road. Though no one at VW has mentioned pricing yet, early rumors suggested a six-figure price tag.

Full article, images, and press release available at link.

Amazing profitability, and amazing focus allow the tyrannical in some ways upper management of VW to bring to fruition amazing vehicles that would never make it through to production at any other manufacturer.
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

The intro music speaks for itself.

No, it's a reminder of what General Motors still is today.

I think it would look a little better with an Audi badge on it IMO. Also that would probably help justify the 6 figure price tag in some people's minds. But like as stated, it's not gonna be a mass produced thing so it probably doesn't matter.

It's not electric but it does looks very EV1ish.

Re: GM Ultralite video: great example of leading edge GM R&D that went absolutely nowhere. Never heard squat about that low-emissions 2-stroke engine again, for example. At least VW is going to trickle out a few examples of their version.

BTW, is it me, or does Chuck Jordan (around the 7:30 mark) sound a little bit like Mr. Burns on The Simpsons?

There is a reason why VW is hesitant about mass-marketing and -producing this car. The same goes for Toyota's i-Road. Think of it. What happens when people start to become aware that most of the time they are the only occupant of that big Volkswagen or Camry they are driving? They either switch to those new eco-vehicles that promise them an energy bill that is slashed by four-fifth or they decide to only use the bigger VW's and Toyota's at times that they really need the extra space. This in turn will make people do a lot longer with those bigger cars. Car sales will collapse!

Ah! Passing my personal bi-millennium: just did my 2000th posting.

This is a different kind of exotic car -- very high performance in fuel efficiency rather than speed. Like other exotics, it's a showcase for the manufacturers engineering capabilities. And, in this case, the result is pretty impressive. It's a pretty realistic vision of what cars might look like in a decade or so: if material technologies get cheaper and strong, lightweight cars become viable at a realistic price, the rest is pretty do-able.

There is a small subset of rich people who will gladly pay to drive the future. Not many, but VW's not planning on making many anyway.

FWIW -- I think it's very cool, but I like to see innovation in this space. I'm also a fan of the Volt. Get the VW's material innovation and the Volt's drivetrain innovation together and you're pretty much driving 2025.
