Frankfurt 2013: VW Golf Sportvan "Concept"

The Golf of Minivans is More of the Former and Less of the Latter

What do you get when you want to build a compact, sporty minivan? The Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan.

The German automaker has revealed its successor to the Golf Plus, stating that this concept car is where “the worlds of compacts and minivans meld together into a new vehicle that offers more space for active recreation, family and work.” The Golf Sportsvan is a near-production concept and is expected to go into production as soon as mid-2014 according to VW.

Much of the Sportsvan’s performance is borrowed from the Golf GTI such as the standard XDS+ system that makes driving through bends sportier, faster and more precise. The model will launch in the “Treadline,” “Comfortline,” and “Highline” trim versions and will be offered with a range of six new engines. Every model will be equipped with start-stop technology, and Volkswagen promises that the Sportsvan will be up to 19 percent more fuel efficient compared to the Golf Plus.

Where is the 'van' part hidden. It looks lucky to carry a set of golf clubs.

VW, just make the Microbus concept you showed us a few years ago. I would love a new Microbus, I'm considering buying a classic bus at some point.

Sliding doors don't necessarily equal a minivan. There are probably more European MPVs with swing-out doors than there are sliders. That said, no, it's not really very minivan. VW's own Touran is closer to that.

Speaking of crossover Golfs though - they do have that, with the Sportsvan's predecessor! The CrossGolf:

The text states noticeably absent is any mention of sliding doors. Sort of a half baked mini van to me then, no matter how functional and good looking it is. More of a tall roof all purpose vehicle than "van".

The CrossGolf was a lifted version of the Golf Plus, which the Golf Sportsvan replaces.

And this is specifically an MPV. Many MPVs do not have sliding doors... see Ford C-Max 5 seater, S-Max/Galaxy, or the Citroen C4-Picasso, etc.

Yes, that was implied by Golf Plus being mentioned in the article.

The list of current MPVs with sliders is probably shorter than those without...Mazda 5, VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra come to mind; it's mostly the van-based models that still have sliders like the Transit Connect, Berlingo/Partner, etc.

a VW sharon found a SX4 and had a "roll in the sack"
IMHO think there is a market for a sporty AND roomy compact in the American market if the price is sharp

That's one big reason why I hate 5 door hatches. Almost all of them look like small mini-vans. Conversely small mini-vans then tend to look like hatches and you get the confusion evident in this thread.

This isn't some unique-to-VW concept, folks. There are several other examples of this genre, such as the Honda Fit, Nissan Note, Fiat Idea, Suzuki Splash, GM's little South American Chevrolet Agile, and even VW's own Brazilian Fox, which aren't true MPVs, but merely hatchbacks with a little extra headroom. VW, however, are unique in offering the theme in a C-segment package.

This is the umpteenth example of confusion created by the failure of the automobile industry and automotive journalists to properly coin universal terms to classify these new segments of vehicles.

The Fit, Note, Idea are widely considered outside of North America as subcompact MPVs...even by the companies that make them. Much like the Meriva, B-Max, or C3 Pic.

I tend to think of the Golf Plus as the C-Max, whereas the Touran is the Grand C-Max.
