Chicago: Nissan Frontier Cummins diesel concept (w/ survey)

Nissan's Cummins tie-up bears first fruit with Frontier Diesel Runner concept
    Autoblog

    February 6, 2014

The 2014 Chicago Auto Show is proving to be a surprisingly big show for alternative fuels. The Chevrolet Silverado HD pickups are getting a compressed natural gas option and the refreshed BMW X3 is receiving a diesel engine, as is the German automaker's 7 Series. You can add one more oil burner to the mix, at least in concept form: Nissan has released its Frontier Diesel Runner Powered by Cummins with a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

While Nissan calls the Cummins-powered Frontier a concept, it's really just a Frontier DesertRunner 4x2 with a diesel engine replacing the standard 4.0-liter V6, and it's meant to gauge consumer interest for a diesel option in the next-generation Frontier. Nissan has clearly noticed that Chevrolet will be offering a diesel in its new Colorado and wants to see how buyers will react to a mid-size alt-fuel pickup from a Japanese brand.

More info available at the link.

Nissan has released a press release with a web address to take a survey & offer feedback on the truck. http://nissannews.com/en-US/nissan/u...issan-frontier

Bring it on. Concept a snore or not, more diesel choices in the truck market are better.

Two things I've taken from this article. 1) The Colorado/Canyon should be able to earn a 30 MPG rating for the highway. 2) Just when you think you've gotten a surprise on your competitors, they pull the cover off of a competing product. GM would do well to try to move up their plans for emissions certification & sales to customers for the 2.8L Dmax.

Nissan has had their own 4 & 6-cylinder diesel engines in other global markets. I think Cummins made some kind of deal to make the Nissan deal happen.

If they bring as spec'd or even a little stronger then ..... there is going to a problem for GM.

Notice..... Nissan pulls the big boy move on a concept @ least...... ie no JATCO 7sp AT or similar...... but yep, the obvious choice of an ZF8HP70.

Which leads to the 8HP 'question' concerning the 5.0 Cummins in the Titan......

So the Department of Energy helps fund the design of an engine.

Yeah GM gets the same break.

I wonder if in the more-long term, Nissan might drop their own in-house diesel they did with Renault known as the V9X engine in Europe?

I don't think there is any doubt about 8 speed transmissions coming out in the new trucks. I think GM and Ford will be the last ones out with them. Not that it truly matters with the 10 speed around the corner. Nissan is in a do or die situation with the Titan. As old as it is, it must be ground breaking and stunning to stand any chance.

I remember reading a GoAuto.com.au article a few months ago & was surprised that Nissan (who now has their US HQ just a 45 minute drive from me) doesn't already sell a diesel engine in the Frontier. Even if they only sold the 2.5TD, it would continue to build brand loyalty.

How does this compare in size to the new Colorado/Canyon? I get a sinking feeling that GM went too close to the big trucks.

As for the Nissan... I can see the rear bumper and roof rack rusting already. I'm sure they'll sell a bunch if they build it.
