Chicago 2013: 2014 Kia Forte Five Door

2014 Kia Forte 5-Door Blows into Windy City

Keeping pace with Hyundai, Kia unveiled its latest production car today: the 2013 Forte 5-Door.

Like it or not Kia is a brand that’s going places. Last year the South Korean automaker’s U.S. sales topped half a million units for the first time ever. To continue that explosive growth they have to keep pushing, and one of the products that will carry them into the future is a stylish hatchback that was just revealed at the Chicago Auto Show this morning.

The 2014 Forte 5-Door is a logical extension of the brand’s C-Segment nameplate. Late last year they unveiled the redesigned sedan-version of the car at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Now the company is showing hatchback enthusiasts some love.

Kia calls the car “ultra hot” and it’s certainly a looker with “European style,” but as always you can judge for yourself. The new Forte 5-Door will be offered in two trim levels: run-of-the-mill EX and sporty SX.

The standard car (read: EX) is powered by a 2.0-liter direct-injection gasoline engine. It delivers an impressive 173 horsepower with 154 lb-ft of torque. Despite its sporty styling it is only offered with a six-speed automatic transmission. If you want three pedals and an H-pattern shifter you’ll have to step up to the SX version.

Interesting how they've minimized the trademark grille.

Seems like a huge step backwards in the front end.
What is happening to the GM that grew up with for these many decades? If I could I would institute a hostile take over and kick the entire board and executives out and fill the positions with creative minds under the age of 35.

So they direct-injected the Nu engine. Now punch it out to 2.4 and make 200 HP like the DI Theta in the Optima.

I actually think this doesn't look too bad. At least they are making a small wagon, something that GM has the resources to do, but won't.

Nice looking car. What I like is I don't see any cartoonish features, like oversized headlights, etc. It almost has a that German seriousness about it's look, which I like. Guess that has something to do with having an German designer....

yea the style is much more understated in this one. All in all it's not bad looking.

And the differentiation between Hyundai and Kia styling becomes less and less.

I don't know if I would call it a wagon.... I would love for it or any others to put an actual wagon out there... but it is a nice hatchbacl and looks pretty nice to me...hadn't noticed the grill being so small until someone here mentioned it.

I would call it a wagon in the sense that it has 5 doors and a roofline that doesn't try to mimic a sedan and comes out to a flat back. But that's just my thought.
It definitely looks better than other Kias and Hyundais.

Is this a BMW, Audi , Lexus all wrapped into one or is it a Kia?
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

Re: Chicago 2013: 2014 Kia Forte Five Door

I suspect the trademark grille is smaller for better aerodynamics. Since the 2.0 engine has 173 horsepower, I don't think it needs the 2.4 with 200 HP. My Optima has the 2.4 and I think the smaller car will do well with the smaller engine.

I think the car will be successful and I would consider it if I was in the market for a car in that segment. I think small cars need to be flexible with a station wagon or hatchback configuration so a substantial package can be transported.
