Wife may buy a Smart ForTwo

So the wifey may get a new job. The location of the job would disallow for the use of public transportation that we currently utilize to great success.

Her car is leased so we'd be playing it fast and loose with the mileage restrictions, and mine is a fuel hog that doesn't have OnStar or ESC or side impact airbags and so forth.

Her solution is to buy a Smart. She wants something small, stylish, and returns great fuel economy on the highway. She likes the Smart or the Mini Cooper, with the Smart being on the top of the list.

She wasn't interested in a Prius because they're ugly. She thinks a Jetta TDI wouldn't work since diesel is usually much more expensive than gasoline. She can't stand Cobalts. She wouldn't be caught dead in a Focus is too low rent. She thinks a Civic Hybrid would be good, but they're pricey. And the Insight is twice as ugly as the Prius. And she certainly couldn't be convinced to look at a Pontiac Vibe.

So if she gets this job, it looks like we'll have our first furrin' car.

Of course, she may hate it on the test drive (which I'm sure will happen), so this may all be just talk.

    We'll see.

Oh la la! Zee Smart eez built in France, non? Zut alors!

(Just checked wikipedia... France or Germany)

Cool car though. Holy mutha, what a drastic change from a Cadillac SRX!!! If I had the choice, I think I'd go Mini over Smart. Smart has some uber kitsch going for it, and is actually a, ahem, smartly designed car... but the Mini just has so much more substance to it. Either way, cool. I approve. And if you buy the Smart, the Fifth Republic thanks you (I'm hoping you get a French one)!

The Smart is a really excellent choice for a commuter vehicle. I tried to get my girlfriend to buy one but she really liked the Golf (because it was a conventional 5 seater.)

The only real negative thing about the Smart is the lack of cruise control.

The convertible models are really nice.

As much as I think the Smart is cute (especially seeing one drive down the road), there are other cars out there that get the same MPG and better utility. It's not a bad run-about car.

I'd roll with the Mini, it's such a sweet lil car. I'd be scared to drive a Smart.

She's not intimidated by much in life.

And she knows about the Premium fuel and says it's recommended, not required so she's not going to put it in there. I can't change her mind when it's made.

OH we looked at the new Aveo5 on the internet and it did not go over well. I forgot about the Astra. But it doesn't score very high in the MPG department.

Which cars? Price is also a factor. She can get a Smart for $15K. What cars for that price get 41mpg?

Eh, they're both really tiny. I'd pick the Smart for several reasons, but RWD is tops!

Ugh, I'd have to make sure the VIN doesn't indicate France before delivery.

Go for a Kia Spectra. I don't know why I keep recommending that car to you people.

No Fit, no Versa, no Spectra. If you can swing a Smart or Mini, that's the way to go. The others are fine cars, but they're for other people. Automakers should be rewarded for offering something different (a la Smart and Mini), not more of the same (everything else).

Maybe she'd wait a bit and get a Fiat 500?
