Watch out Mazda 6 MPS! The VW Passat R36 is coming to get you!

At last! I was waiting for it. It looks like the Mazda 6 MPS will have some serious German competition ahead. I like it what I see.

Volkswagen is currently testing at Nürburgring the new sporty Passat version R36. The photos are showing two prototypes of both sedan and wagon.

The car has larger air intakes in the front end, large alloy wheels (still painted black), and the rear end is featuring a small spoiler and two exhaust pipes.

Power for this R36 comes from a V6 280 HP engine.

The current Passat 3.6 sold in North America, already produces 280 Bhp. Volkswagen should bump the R36 to 300-ish. 280 Bhp is not bad, but it's not good enough when it is intended to be the top engine under the bonnet of the top of the range sporty version.

Why not a Passat R36 with a Twin-Turbo 3.6 V6 and 360 Bhp? However, if VW introduced a 360 Bhp Passat, there wouldn't be a point of existence for the Audi S4. So I guess a "Super-Passat" will never happen. Oddly enough the new Audi S3 is outclassed by the Golf R32.

    Twin Turbo = $$$
They should have bumped it up to 300hp at least...

The MS6 will still be cheaper and more durable.

Thing is though, you may get 260 Bhp in the Audi S3 whether you "only" get 256 Bhp in the VW R32. But the 3.2 V6 24V in the R32 produces more torque. The R32 also has the advantage of the DSG gearbox (an optional extra). Not available for the S3.

    R32: 320 ft/ Ibs @ 2500 Rpm.
    S3: 258 ft/Ibs @ 2500 Rpm

While the R32 howls sweet six-cylinder music, the beefed-up Turbo four-cylinder in the S3 sounds anodyne and harsh. And because Audi opted for only one huge Turbocharger, instead of two smaller ones. The S3 suffers of turbo-lag at low revs.

Hmm, didn't think they would go through with it. I thought the racy concept was just that, a racy concept.

    I like it.

I think you forgot to convert the R32's torque figure from Nms to lb-fts, as the information I've glanced at states 320 for the former, 236 for the latter.

Anyway, the S3's spades are an allegedly lighter engine as well as (I think) permanent 40/60 Quattro AWD. From what I understand, the R32's Halidex system is like SH-AWD in that it operates in front drive until driving conditions prompt it to do otherwise. All considered, the R32 probably understeers more, and while natural aspiration may make its run through the revs feel more natural, the basic numbers suggest that it's mostly feel.

I won't speculate on durability. But as the top of the line 3.6 crawls a little too close to forty grand, pricing is a good question to ask of the R36.

Lol I wouldn't be suprised if the Passat comes out with some power. VW is trying to move back up market, its like the switch back and forth every 5 years. And now they are stepping right onto Audi..that relationship is so messed up.
