VWs Emissions-Test Trickery May Not Be Illegal in Europe

VW’s Emissions-Test Trickery May Not Be Illegal in Europe
DANNY HAKIM and CLAIRE BARTHELEMY/The New York Times
    November 11, 2015

The Volkswagen scandal has put Europe’s permissive testing practices in the spotlight, and has raised questions about the compatibility of American and European auto regulations. Trans-Atlantic trade talks are underway, and the objectives include fostering mutual recognition of auto regulations.

“What we have developed is a phony system of testing where the member states are in competition with each other for who can make it the most easy for the car manufacturers to pass the test,” said Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy, a Dutch member of the European Parliament, who lamented that European governments do not conduct random testing of their own, as the E.P.A. does.

Of EU countries the Netherlands was the only one that turned out to be in favor of stricter testing to enforce the emission regulations the EU already agreed upon. Bunch of hypocrites. It also shows the industrial might of Germany.

    Agreed.

If no real changes occur over there as a result, every time Europe complains about our efforts to "combat climate change," it will seal that hypocrite label.

TTAC: Volkswagen will announce Thursday a deadline for whistle blowers to come forward with information related to the ongoing diesel scandal without reprisal. The automaker is working to gather as much information on the scandal as possible by applying more pressure to employees who may have known anything about what happened regarding the rigging of diesel emissions through software.

Who is 'Volkswagen' in this case? Is management still pretending that a rogue bunch of engineers did this?

Actually anytime (almost) anyone says "combat climate change" it should seal the hypocrite label.

The way I understood it (from Bob Lutz on CNBC last week) - You have A-hole executives, that simply say "Don't tell me it can't be done! Just do it!" and it is a culture that exists up-and-down the corporation.

The threat of your existence within the company, it is a management "style" if you want to call it that, I guess............

I actually worked for a German Company for a short period of time; I went from being hired to "run the show" in the US, (because they had zero local market understanding) to a puppet in less than a year. It sounds eerily similar, obviously on a much grander scale at VW, but still. Anyway after 12 months passed, and the claw-back of my signing bonus had lapsed, I got the hell out of there; about 4 months later. Interestingly enough, it has been a fast-spinning revolving door, since I got there, the last guy I hired before I left is the senior most employee, with the exception of one pawn from the UK. In that division alone; 3rd President, 4th VP, and 3rd Director, which today is vacant; it took them 16 months to back-fill my role, and the person that just started 10 months ago is ready to leave. I ran into my old boss, he was a "lifer" left about a year after I did, and 2 months before his "new" boss.

OK, I'm rambling, so fascinating; AAPEX week was like a class reunion............

Tonight's BBC Panorama investigation showed that the VW passed the standard cold Euro test but failed a non-standard warm test - in contrast the Opel/Vauxhall Zafira failed ALL the tests.

The mire is starting to hit the fan and VW aren't going down on their own!

I did read the story talking about VW not offering European customers the same goodwill packages that is being offered in North America. Perhaps this is the reason.
Still, the estimate cost to VW is something like 44 Billion Euros.... Holy cow!
    85 cars since 1975....
    Good night and good luck.
