Volvo Takes Another Step in Moving Away From Ford

Volvo to shake off Ford ties with new platforms, engines

It would seem Volvo is finally getting around to throwing all of Ford's things out of the apartment. Automotive News reports the Swedish automaker is preparing to unleash a range of new engines as well as a fresh platform designed entirely in house. The powerplants include an all-new four-cylinder engine set to bow before the end of this year before arriving in the US by 2014. Shortly thereafter, the world should get its first glimpse at the next-generation XC60, which will the company's first model to make use of the Volvo scalable platform architecture (SPA). US buyers can expect to see that machine on their roads by early 2015.

I think this is perfectly on par with what they should be doing. You can only live off your past for so long. Good on them for not waiting til it was too late. Hopefully good models shall continue.

Ford got what they wanted out of the deal, no Ford hardware in Geely, so Volvo has to develop new parts and platforms. Wonder if this new Volvo hardware will end up in any Geely products to spread costs around, giving them a little edge internationally versus other Chinese makes?

Pretty much. I remember reading a while back that Volvo would move to all 4-cylinders in their lineup. I speculate that we'll still see some lingering I-6s lying around in your S80 successors, etc. Bigger question though: How is the XC60 getting redesigned before the XC90, which is impossibly outdated now?

Yeah, I found that bit odd. I could have sworn I saw somewhere that a new XC90 was the next Volvo in line to debut... ah, here: http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/all-...in-2014/265062

What Car? says they got the news from the head of Volvo itself. Maybe Autoblog's assertion that the XC60 will be the next all new model is a typo.

There's a few dated models, I am quite shocked they are not getting attention. The S80 and XC90 should be the first if not at the same time, IMO.

The XC60 is just a cosmetic facelift, probably doesnt cost much where as the XC90 is going to need an entirely new platform probably.

I was surprised that the XC90's MSRP only started at $39k, that's like a couple thousand more than the XC60. Considering the XC90 still gets top marks for safety despite its age, and IMO still looks pretty decent, that's not actually that bad of a deal, depending on how much the incentives are.
