    Volkswagen Scirocco Concept Debuts

Volkswagen scIROCco Concept debuts at Paris Auto Show

from vwvortex.com: "The Short Version: After what seems like an eternity of rumors and digitally created photos of a possible return of the Scirocco, Volkswagen finally shows us a concept version of the Scirocco called the IROC Concept, a play on the spelling of scIROCco. As you can see in the photos Volkswagen has chosen not to pursue a retro styled Scirocco endeavor and instead went with a clean sheet of paper and a brief to make sure the vehicle would be a useful 2+2. The photos hide the true dimensions of this vehicle - compared to the current GTI the IROC is a full 4 inches longer in the wheelbase, 1.6 inches wider in track, a full 3.3 inches lower in overall height and 1.6 inches longer overall. The concept is powered by a TSI engine (VW's supercharged and turbocharged powerplant) that is rated at 210hp with a DSG gearbox. Expect the production version of the Scirocco to be very similar to the concept when it appears in late 2008. Volkswagen of America is still looking carefully at this vehicle for the U.S. market, but no decisions have been made yet to offer it in the States."

    VW lifts a Chevy name

No fair....I was hoping Iroc Z would be a new Camaro nameplate.

    article:

    VW’s 2009 Iroc Coupe

Wolfgang Bernhard has barely warmed the seat as Volkswagen chairman and he is already attacking the market with products he hopes make the German automaker cool again. Look for proof in the reborn Scirocco coupe—dubbed Iroc—which makes its global debut in Paris in September.

If Bernhard’s plan comes to fruition, it will do for VW what the TT did for Audi—provide the German carmaker with a modern, relevant and desirable image-building model.

Iroc is planned for North American showrooms by the end of 2008, the same year VW launches its Land Rover LR2 rival, the Tiguan.

The original Scirocco was the highlight of the VW lineup when it was launched in 1974, an affordable Giugiaro-designed coupe that could seat four, and—in top-of-the-line, 16-valve 2.0-liter form—hold its own against some of the best two-door offerings of the day. It bolstered VW’s image and helped lay the foundations for some of its most successful years on record. With the Iroc (the name uses the middle four letters from the word Scirocco), VW hopes to recapture that old Scirocco magic.

German surrender to Japanese design principals is now complete. Aside from the front clip and badges, this is a Honda.

Ugh. I'm super disappointed. Scorroco spy-shots from months ago showed a much sexier car. This looks like a sportier 3-door Golf... but it's nowhere as interesting as it should be.

On second look it's really not all that bad, perhaps... but I still wish it was like the original concept. The rear fenders are quite nice, and like that they're constantly evolving the VW front end. Hits the Volco C30 (or whatever it's called) coupe head-on.

Didn't the IROC name end up a Dodge property? I thought that after Chevy stopped paying for use of the name that Dodge offered a Daytona IROC, no? Anywho the name might make sense elsewhere, but in the US I don't see it flying.

And you could say Chevy lifted it from Dodge anyhow.

Yep. Daytona IROC. I think this happened in MY92 when they stopped using the Shelby name for the 2.5 Turbo cars, also MY92 was the year they stopped using the flip-up headlights which looked so good on my '91

The vents in the VW dash look like the grille, but upside down. Oh, and I see little comparo between the Nomad and VW, and none with the SS.

Split in the steering wheel, which coincidentally is on the VE Holdens and NG CTS and Sigma cars.
