Volkswagen to Invest Record $86 Billion in its climb to the #1 position

Bring on the Mustang!... No, not the Lee Iacocca one. The P-51. Too bad one got lost in Reno. Because it is that time again: Germans striving for world domination.

Volkswagen AG will invest a record 62.4 billion euros (86.1 billion in today's dollars) over the next five years to underpin its goal of becoming the world’s largest carmaker.

The supervisory board voted today to approve the spending on plants, vehicles and research and development for the carmaker’s nine brands, the Wolfsburg, Germany-based company said in a statement.

Oh my god, do these people know anything?

You don't try to become the world's largest car company. It's a byproduct of having the best cars for the most value in the most markets.

This is going to end in disaster.

Agreed - however, I wonder if there will be a difference between GM and VW. GM apparently had no plan to be large and how to maintain it. Will VW have a better chance because they must have some kind of plan?

I wish them luck, and I hope GM stays focused on making great cars that produce profits (not on the sheer number of cars sold).

Dear VW, I hope you have realized that those formely # 1 would not wish those aspirations on their worst competitor!
I want a car so violent that the mere thought of full throttle would cause a heart attack. That actually going wide open throttle in would result in nothing less than instant death!

You can always tell a German, but you can't tell him much. Where is Sergeant Schultz when you really need him?

I believe that VW has 86 billion bucks as much as I believe they will eclipse Toyota and GM by 2018.

FRANKFURT: Volkswagen could make a move to take over Japan's Suzuki, German magazine Der Spiegel reported, citing an unnamed senior manager at VW. "I do not rule out this possibility," the weekly quoted the person as saying on Sunday. Japanese news agency Kyodo also reported citing senior Volkswagen officials that the Wolfsburg, Germany-based carmaker might launch a hostile takeover bid of Suzuki Motors.

Suzuki would be a very nice takeover for VW, because of its "inbeddedness" in the Far East, its focus on small cars and.... and its motorcycles division. For a company that has the ambition to become a "global mobility provider" that makes all the sense in the world. Is GM paying attention? Yawn.

I also believe then VW will burn their money so fast and once at the top, it'll be the beginning of their decline.

If my prediction came true, it'll be only a coincidence.

Though I do wonder, will VW just buy their way to the top? The talk of them buying Suzuki reminds me of GM from the Roger Smith era. That would also explain the talk of them possibly buying Opel. It sounds like they have a plan...

They don't have a plan. They have a delusion.

That is far better than a plan. A delusion has no downside (other than when reality strikes, but that has nothing to do with a delusion), and there's no thought required.
