    The return of Auto Union?

    The return of Auto Union

There's an interesting rumour from Germany: that the new mega-corp that will be created when Porsche and VW merge will be called Auto Union.

This isn't just another example of the Germans revitalising an old brand a la Maybach. It does make historical sense. After all, Auto Union was the amalgamation of four German car makers: Horch, Audi, DKW and Wanderer, which created the four-ring logo that Audi still uses today.

It also makes sense for VW, finally ending the confusion between the VW group and the VW brand.

There's also the interesting fact that Ferdinand Porsche engineered the famous Auto Union racing cars of the 1930's.

Makes sense... it's not VW group if Porche is in charge... but then you don't want VW Polos to be called Porches either.

Really? Just curious as to why? Is it because of some historical context or something else?

Myself I would think it was a good way to revive a corporate identity and create a good front for the unified company.

    That's just me.
