Report: Jaguar urges execs to move to China or risk promotions

    From Autoblog:

From the sound of things, Jaguar's hunger for a slice of the Chinese auto market may be causing growing pains. According to The Daily Telegraph, Des Thurlby, the human resources director for the car maker, has been doing his best to encourage executives to pull up roots and do a tour of duty in either China, the United States or Russia. The British news agency calls some of Thurlby's conversations "pointed," with the director indicating that those workers who choose to skip a stint in international waters are less likely to see promotion within the company

Frankly, that's a very smart move. I wish more companies out there required tenures in international markets.

Jaguar's leaders see how Jaguar's market works in China and the US and Russia and see how each of the markets differ.

Then they can help adapt their products to fit each of the markets.

Absolutely!!! I don't see why not!!
Do a 1-2 year rotation among the worldwide divisions. Companies like GE do it. It brings you exposure to the business and places the employee/executive on a track to succeed and rise in the company ranks.

I understand your point. But on the other hand, can't doing this risk the very heart of Jaguar? That is to say, it's "Britishness"? As I type this, I suddenly recall that only Jaguar factories remain in the UK and that ownership now resides in Mumbai.

    Silly me.

I hate corporate-prescribed "paths to success". There should be a variety of natural, individual paths that each individual choses. Those who want foreign experience should be allowed to get that. Those that don't shouldn't have to. The key is to make it easier to follow whichever path one wants -- not to be told which one has to be followed. Otherwise you end up with a homogeneous culture where everyone's been through the same experiences and has largely the same outlook.

BTW, when I read the thread title, I imagined Jaguar execs receiving threats along the lines of "Move to China or you will be promoted @#$%!"

They will only benefit by it. Seeing how some of their sub-contractors in China operate may open their eyes a little.
Even just the exposure to a different culture would be valuable as long as they embrace it and not avoid it.
I would suggest that people who want to operate as executives in a world market should actually experience more of it. Sure there will people will valid reasons not to like family reasons but generally it would be a good thing. As one who did it I would encourage anyone with the opportunity to take it especially if you are young. I wish I had have been 30 when I went to China.
