Report: Even More Maserati and Alfa Romeo Models Delayed

    Road & Track
    12-2-15

This time, it's the Maserati Alfieri sports car and the Giulia-based Alfa Romeo SUV in the holding pattern—both models that were promised to hit dealerships in 2016. And according to a report from BloombergBusiness, the delay all comes down to parent company Fiat Chrysler's slower-than-expected growth in China.

Things don't sound like they're too good at FCA.

FCA won't like my idea, but at this point I think they need to direct more funds to the NA brands than the European brands. I adore the concept of a great Alfa lineup, but other than that, meh. I'll just say it: I think Fiat as a brand is mostly a waste of money in the near and medium term. I would seriously consider pouring more future investment into Chrysler as a global brand, eventually getting rid of most of Fiat. Yeah, I know. It's crazy. But I just see less of a point outside of the 500 line than with virtually all other FCA brands. It's basically what happened to Lancia drawn out longer. A remarkable Alfa lineup would essentially be an Italian Audi. Maserati makes up the "real" luxury. Jeep and Chrysler could become decent global brands (obviously Chrysler needs more work on that). Dodge might be a sort of companion to Abarth as performance-oriented brands depending on the regional market (most Dodges don't make as much sense in Europe, for example). Ram is obviously NA-centric. But Fiat.....I just am not seeing it. Not in a significant way.

Sergio is saving all the money he needs to take over GM, replace Mary Barrah and give Reuss and his gang their retirement checks.

Ralph Giles will be in charge of design for the Silverado.

Fiat has no US history compared to Chrysler and Jeep, some friends of mine buy Mopar just like some of us are loyal GM or Ford buyers. This might sound funny but in this area the Fiat has caught hold with the gay community, that might be a good marketing tool for FCA. The reliability of Fiat is also suspect.

It would be suspect if there was a question whether it was crap or not. There is no question.

Sergio couldn't afford to throw a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese.

That's sad the beautiful Alferi is delayed.

The Maserati sedans should have taken hold yet it's lack of satisfaction of buyers and high lease rates compared to the Germans took hold.

This dame will happen to alfa unfortunately.

The German marketing departments know low base lease rates for base AWD heated seat sedan and then bang the consumers with the 100 percent depreciation on much more expensive option list.

Just as Cadillac doesn't get it....neither does Sergio.

Fiats a loser brand in America known as a throw away car....

Maserati, Alfa and fiat should be all in the same showroom....

Maserati, and alfa should be premium and near premium brand experience with fiat as a boutique economy sporting Italian brand...

There is no volume economy without subsidized lease rates...

Dodge, jeep and ram are profitable American brands....Chrysler less so other than the town and country.....the 300 can be a niche American luxury sedan with the 200 being a mid pack sales performer...

China was in Sergio's master plan? How could that have failed? Even Lincoln is succeeding in china these days...

Maybe the Chinese know fiat is crap...

Didn't Sergio get a pile of cash from the sale of Ferrari? Not 100% sure of this as I get confused about the ownership of Ferrari in the Fiat family.

Sergio should stop wasting time and money with Maserati/Alfa and this whole take over GM thing. He has a couple of gems in his house - Jeep and Ram. He needs to focus on those to build profits. Once he has really built up those two brands then he can focus on Alfa/Maserati.

I don't know if it sold yet, but they're not even getting 2b for it.

The problem with depending upon China for anything is that volume tends to be exceptional, profits a good deal less so. Sergio obviously garnered some attention with his GM takeover strategy, but deals like that move fast or not at all and he has to be getting close to the end of his 15 minutes here and, by proxy, close to the end of his window to make that deal happen.

While more can be done with Jeep, they're seeing great growth on high-buck models (Grand Cherokee outsold Explorer last month), so it's not like they're ignoring the brand. Hopefully they can duplicate that success with the other brands. I don't care much about Maserati, but have a soft sport for Alfa.
