    Radically redesigned 2012 Porsche 911!

    Scratch the "radically".
Official 2012 Porsche 911 images spill onto the internet

Here it is, folks: the all-new 991 Porsche 911. Like nearly every 911 that came before it, the iconic coupe's design has not changed too much, keeping the line's classic styling and proportions intact. Aside from some new LED running lamps and revised air intakes up front and some thinner taillights out back, the 2012 model is extremely similar to the 997 911 currently out on the road.

The big changes, though, are more than skin-deep. The car is about two inches longer than the current 911, and features revised six-cylinder engines. The base Carrera now uses a 3.4-liter direct-injected flat-six, producing 350 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while the Carrera S will use a direct-injected 3.8-liter unit, delivering 400 hp. Both engines will be mated to a seven-speed manual (yes, we said it) or PDK dual-clutch transmission, either of which can be had with launch control.

Inside, the 911's cabin uses a design borrowed from the Panamera, with a more pronounced, downward-sloping center console. Like the exterior, nothing radical has been done to the car's innards, and that's just fine with us.

Seems to look a little sleeker on the outside, but, yeah, it's hard to tell what's really different.

The interior? Meh. I'm sure it feels wonderful, but the design is pretty uninspiring.

Do yourself a favour and buy a Corvette instead.

I think the fans might have something to say about that front/3/4 view. Very un-911 like, at least to my eyes. They nailed the side view though.

350 HP is lame. I Think GT-R is a better buy at the lower end

Its a bigger step forward than I imagined it would be visually, and the interior is stunning. I prefer the Corvette, but this car with its rear weight bias and with the PDK will be very close to 4.0-4.5 seconds dead 0-60 for the base car.

It will no doubt sell and is an impressive machine, the interior actually looks like more of the same from where I am, not really that impressive considering the pricing.
    Power however disappointing.
My understanding that its actually mid engined now..

Its rear weight bias is lessened, as is the rear weight distribution but its still emphatically rear engined.

I think the 7-speed manual is the most notable aspect of this, the new 911.

Well, that's why they give you nearly 25 configurations ... you could pick one with more power, among other things. And it wouldn't be a Porsche if you weren't forced to pony up a bunch more cash for pretty much anything more than the wheels and the seats (and not the good wheels or the good seats either).

Besides, Porsches have rarely been about raw power.

The interior is so impossibly boring and the exterior is kind of bland, too.

    At least it's fast.

This is a small (but positive) evolution from the current 911 interior. The current interior is actually *very* nice in person with high-quality materials.

    Consider the competition:

Amazing how true to corvette the interior has remained..
Hopefully the next one retains its corvetteness

I hope the next steering wheel is smaller too. GM Steering wheels for too long have always felt like they came from a WW II Jeep..

Anyways Mr. EMH, why would one want a base 911 over a GT-R?

If I were deciding between the two, I would get the 911 -- I wouldn't even have to think about it. You ask why?
    1. I'm never in enough of a hurry to need to do 0-60 in 3 seconds flat
    2. I don't have to puke a bit every time I step in the car and look around
    3. I don't have to deal with a Nissan dealer*
    4. I'm old enough (mid 30's) to appreciate refinement over brute force
    5. I like colors -- not all my shoes are shades of gray
    6. I never wear a Darth Vader mask (not even on Halloween) but occasionally wear a suit

I could keep going, or we could poll the nearly 500 people in the US who bought a 911 this past month vs. the 50 or so who bought a GT-R.

    * I have had nothing but bad experiences with the 4 Nissan dealers I have dealt with (my wife, then GF, had a Nissan in college). In comparison I've had decent or positive experiences with every other auto dealer I've dealt with (2 Honda dealers, 2 Cadillac dealers, and 2 BMW dealers). All experiences based on purchase and/or service for vehicles bought brand new.
