Next BMW M3 will get an Inline 6

Thank the car lords that the blasphemous rumors of BMW developing a V6 for the next M3 were wrong..... The next M3 will stick with the inline configuration.

I found it funny that BMW was spending significant development dollars on a modular N series 3,4,6 cylinder engine program similar in nature to GM's Atlas engine program yet many believed that they were also developing a V6. Personally I believe that it will feature a similar tri turbo arrangement to the N57 tri turbo, and I would love to see a M performance 3 series with the exemplary 381 hp and 516 lb ft N57 tri turbo diesel.

The article did state they were considering a V6. How far the V6 proposal got and how close it was being approved, who knows.

Either way still happy the only 6 cylinder BMW will use will be an Inline 6.

Good. BMW is known for the inline six and it's a great engine. Love the 3.0 in my Z3.

    I didn't care for the 3.0 in my X5.
And twin or tripple turbo-chargers sounds like a nightmare for maintenance and repair.
To me, GM's answer for the ATS-V should be the GenV 6.2 putting out 470 hp, with low costs and high performance.

I agree because as widely renowned BMW is for its inline six Cadillac is for its V8 engines.

My Falcon has an inline six and my Mercedes had one too. They are great engines - not overstressed and my ones have been good reliable engines. The Benz got over 300,000K before a rebuild of the head.

The basic design of the inline 6 is excellent, as is the GM V8. My issue is the degree of complexity added by twin or tripple turbochargers compared to the straight forward GM ohv V8, an engine renowned for compact size, very good power and fuel economy for its power, and long term reliability that results in low cost and long life, unlike BMW and MB cars that require more repairs at a substantial cost.

Inline 6 is the perfect butter smooth configeration around the 3.0 litre mark

The last couple of them from BMW have been bloody briliant
