The hot S80 is called the T6, with the 6 indicating it's inline 6 motor and the T indicating the twin turbo's residing on that motor. The new hot S80 will most likely be the T8 again using turbos but as the name implies moving to a V-8 this time around. That mill would be the new 4.4L V-8, which will allow the new S60 to move up to the turbo inline 6 and the S40 to gain an R version. Currently an S40R would step on the S60R's toes since they both use the same inline-5.

There is currenly no R model of the S80, but apparently we could get a S80R, or S80 T8R if Volvo returns to traditional R nomenclature, with AWD and twin turbos for the next model. I for one would love to see that on this very sexy new body, and I think the XC90 turbo V-8 concept diaplayed a while back hinted at exactly this.

That said, I am impressed with the styling of this new car since it manages to remain in keeping with the current design ethic from Volvo and yet still manages to look appropriately distinctive and new. Also, notice that the S80 still has the "Bangle Butt" that this car began using years before Bangle did! I have often wondered if BMW's boy wonder wasn't inspired by that original S80.

I like it. It doesn't look like a Lucerne to me.

    Re: The New Volvo S80

A very nice evolution of the current design. I like the way Volvo used the third rear window to distinguish between S60 and S80, but whatever. Interior is also good as all Volvo interiors (can't make too much of this pic). If you've got a good design, you can keep it for ages, like Jag did

I just noticed the ornament around the headlight base - seems like Volvo borrowed that cue from the "makeup" Saab 9-5, or the other way around (who's spying on who?).

But, what is much better, if you scroll down the page there's Heuliez's FOUR DOOR FOLDING HARDTOP 407 Cabrio! It proves you can still make hardtops AND four door convertible these days! Given Heuliez's cooperation with major automakers, I think this might an indicator of such cars coming our way. And one car that Heuliez makes is the Opel Tigra...

    Mmm... It has four wheels?

More seriously - Lucerne's styling is so indistinctive that it looks like most large cars from this angle or another. There's nothing about that car that says Buick, quite unlike with this S80, which has Volvo written all over it.

I also think that the Volvo rear end is not a Bangle Butt technically. A Bangle Butt has a pronounced spoiler/lip at the end of the trunk lid, which makes it look like it was laying on the original body. Volvo does not look like that, I would rather say the styling cue is Step Sides

I gotta say, they did a really good job on it! Just a basic evolution of the current model... easily you can still tell it's a Volvo S80, yet it's fresher, sleeker, more stylish, yet still very luxurious.

    In my opinion,

It looks more ike an evolved S60 than an evolved S80.

Either way, I like it. It looks great.

Wow, it looks really nice. It kind of reminds me of the Acura RL in the front though.

Wow, What a beautiful car! I wonder how long it will take for the S60 and the S40 to receive this facelift! I have always loved the styling of Volvos!

*edit* wow, I just noticed the center console! Check it out, it is "floating" IE, there is a big gap below it, quite spiffy if you ask me.

BMW was using the "stepped rear" before the S80 was even introduced....
