    Mini planning Speedster.

MINI has reportedly approved production of a new model known only as the Speedster. Although the generic moniker could be replaced by a more original badge, the name clearly indicates what to expect: a raked windshield, just two seats, a removable (not convertible) roof panel, and performance-oriented handling.

Over the years, there have been two main types of “speedsters” in the automotive universe. The first has no windshield at all, while the second has a very low windscreen and no roof. It appears MINI is opting for the latter configuration, considering the market for cars with windshields is probably several orders of magnitude larger than the market for cars that require a helmet with a visor.

I sincerely hope this ends up as a Triumph (a brand to which BMW has rights for automotive purposes). Otherwise, it would be an example of stretching a brand too thin. A "MINI Speedster" is an MG, as we all know, but there already is an "MG Speedster" made in Longbridge by SAIC/Nanjing...

I hope it ends up in the vein of an upscale Miata but with the packaging efficiency like a Mini. And please, please, PLEASE, no more center mounted speedo.

No dice... That is one thing that makes a MINI a MINI.

I'm pretty excited about the idea of this. I've found myself sort of wishing for a MINI with a lower roofline, lower seating position, and possibly just a rear cargo area without the back seats.

I'm guessing that BMW feels that there will be a market for this, I have noticed that a lot of people in the MINI community have already done a "rear seat delete" mod, where the rear seats are removed, and generally rear panels off of a JCW GP are used (that model didn't have the rear seats from the factory)

But yeah... I'm looking forward to this!

If it only takes one thing to make a MINI a MINI, and that one thing is a center speedo, it would make the most business sense for BMW to buy the Ion tooling off of Saturn. It would undoubtedly be cheaper than developing a new car, especially since the Ion has the one feature that makes a MINI a MINI. Win win--BMW saves money without diluting the core feature of MINI, and GM gets some much needed capital.

You should work on your reading comprehension. I didn't say that it was THE one thing that made a MINI a MINI, I said it was one thing. That means that there are also other things that make the vehicle a MINI.

Weak . The sentence "That is one thing that makes a MINI a MINI" can sooner be interpreted as "the one thing" much more readily than "one of the things" in a written context, as there is no inference to other factors, one is specifed. Had it been spoken word, inflection could overcome that.

I think you might be thinking of the Beatle, the Mini was always front engine FWD.

I don't know where you went to school and what you were taught, however, what you just said does not make any sense. I obviously feel the opposite. I guess I actually say what I mean, rather than attempt to make others interpret what I say.

As I said, your reading comprehension is weak

Thats why I said 'shh jk', I knew that. Its just funny how things change and people don't like it but then there are new buyers and thus creating a market for the orginal. So both people can be happy, yet both people complain.

I think Mini should make a sedan and 4 door of the normal mini as well.

But really, why a sedan. We want a selection of compact-to-fullsize sedans, with hatchback and wagon versions, delivery vans and all! Oh wait...
