Mini is recalling 235,000 cars due to an electrical fault which can cause vehicles to burst into flames.
Nearly 30,000 cars in the UK are understood to be affected.
The move follows months of complaints from drivers who claimed their cars had burst into flames, often when parked or unattended.

Somehow I feel this story won't get the same traction the Volt had, even though the stories are apples and oranges.

But do you have to sit in a wrecked Mini for two weeks, and wait for it to catch fire?

Making you wait like that is just unacceptable!

    We demand IMMEDIATE fires!

I wonder if this will turn out to be another case of a lead free soldered PCB with solder whiskers or just poor engineering/validation.

Damn that GM. That is why I don't buy anything American; Ford, you have to be rear-ended, GM, it has to be wrecked and sit for two weeks, and I don't remember any Chryslers bursting into flames. Why go through all that when Minis go up without any warning or pressure from the owner.

Are there going to be Congressional hearings about this? Oh wait, those idiots only act surprised if it takes two weeks after a crash test in a lab for a car to catch on fire.

No Congress would never have a mini-hearing!

The internal combustion engine is clearly a failed concept and should be banned.

Actually, it only happens on a major side impact that then pushes the vehicle at a sufficient speed into a post wherein the damage intrudes upon the battery, which is in the centre of the vehicle, whereupon the car must then be inverted so as to possibly allow for coolant to touch parts of the electronics. Then, and only then, maybe, you might, if everything was just so, you'd get a fire in 2 or 3 weeks. Obviously a serious concern because no one from Congress could possibly make a decision in so short a time. They'd still be inside the vehicle determining whether it would be safer to remain with the vehicle or leave it posthaste.

Obviously, much safer to just be driving around and have your car ignite. Speeds up decision making if your pants are on fire.

I think this is actually caused by British Mini drivers, named Sterling, Leighton, Wadsworth, Royle, Alistair, Blake, Urquhart, amd Asbury, spilling hot (tobacco) ash from their pipes whilst DWSP (Driving Whilst Smoking Pipe.)

    Pip pip!
