    Mercedes-Benz C400 Biuturbo 4Matic

This was just mentioned in the last Autobild. Mercedes is working on a twinturbo 4-l V6 engine with 400-horsepower that will be sold with 4Matic only.

The article mentions a 0-100 km/h time of 4 seconds, but I think that is typo and that they actually mean 5 seconds since the C63 AMG is expected to do 0-100 km/h in around 4.2 seconds. The C400 Biturbo 4Matic is probably Mercedes' answer to the BMW 335i.

At the same time, Audi is also working on a competitor for the BMW 335i. The Audi engine is a 3-l V6 with 333-horsepower TFSI engine. I presume that TFSI stands for Turbo-Stratified-Fuel-Injection.

    Good stuff.

Definitely good stuff - competition improves the breed! And the horsepower war continues...

Do you think this engine would have similar fuel economy to a non-turbo V6? These numbers are on par with the rumored twin-turbo 3.7 liter Ford Duratec V6.

You don't mind if I post the same comment I posted on the GCZ do you?

Besides, smaller Turbocharged engines are the new trend from now on; because they are more powerful and yet they are more economical and pollute less than a bigger normally aspirated engine. Expect to see the return of the Golf GTI 1.6 with 4 mini turbos for each pair of cylinders producing 400 Bhp
    .
Come to think of it, I'm not that far off the mark.

Take the BMW 5-Series range for instance.

You have the 535i with a 3.0 Straight Six Twin-turbo producing 306 Bhp. The 550i has a 4.8 V8 normally aspirated which produces 360 Bhp. That's "just" 54 Bhp more than the 6-Cylinder unit. So why should you bother going for the 550i?

You would argue the V8 unit produces more torque. And that would be correct. Fine. But BMW managed the problem of turbo-lag by adding a pair of mini-turbos for each 3 cylinders. This new engine has no turbo-lag at all. So you get the same power of the V8 with more economy and less carbon dioxides.

There are rumours, this 3.0 I-6 Biturbo engine produce a lot more than just 306 Bhp. Alpina for instance, managed to extract 360 Bhp from the same engine, only fiddling with the engine ECU on the new B3.

    As for the Mercedes...

A new C-Class AMG with a thumping 4.0 V6 Twin-turbo producing 460 Bhp and 4Matic would give nightmares to the Audi RS4 and it would literally thrash the Lexus IS-WTF.

Not sure if it would scare the new BMW M3, though.

I think the fuel economy will be slightly higher than a regular C350, but still within acceptable limits.

By the way, I believe it was Edmunds that tested the new C350 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds! Pretty respectable for a car with only "268-hp".

Despite what the marketing might say, this C400 Biturbo 4Matic will still be a Mercedes at heart and focus more on luxury than sport. It will be a capable performer in the sports department, no doubt, but the BMW 3er will do that aspect much better since it was engineered for that more than luxury.

OT, but the magazine scan says something about an Audi Hybrid, right?

I was wondering when Mercedes would come out with a 335 fighter. I am glad to see Audi doing it also. I love Audi but it they seem to lag in speed unless you get a V8 model ie, S4 4.2. I would love to see Audi with a turbo version of their 3.6 that goes for around $40-45,000. Then VW can have a Passat with 3.6T mabey R36T!

All German luxury brands are working on hybrids so they can offer competition against Toyota / Lexus. The article does indeed mention that.

Mercedes will have their first hybrid available in 2008. Audi will follow shortly.

Unless I'm mistaken the C400 is being replaced by the C450 and it likely will do 0-60 in very close to 4 seconds flat. The new C63 AMG will do 0-60 in about 3.7 seconds.

    C400 = 3.0TT V6

    I haven't heard about a C450. Is that coming?

That would be the 340i, wouldn't it? Since BMW is apparently replacing the N55 and renaming their cars.

4 seconds, no, but maybe "in the 4 second range" is what they meant since the 335i has been observed doing sub-5 0-60s:
    http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...ve_first_test/

This being 400hp might actually lend more credence to the blistering 0-60 time supposedly observed in the most recent teaser for the ATS-V AND the 400/400 V6 rumored to come with Omega...

I think this lends even more credence to my hypothesis that the Vsport, ATS-V, and Escalade will get 500/500 LF3 variants and ATS, CTS, and CT6 will be getting that 400/400 3.0L TTV6...

    It's not official AFAIK.

    http://www.autoblog.com/2014/04/23/m...rt-amg-report/

If the stories are correct, it looks like it'll basically be for customers that want a luxury sport compact but with AWD, as the C63 thus far has no AWD option. I'm interested, especially seeing how the C400 performed in C&D's test of it.
