Laser-powered headlights on fast track at BMW

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44412818...h_and_gadgets/

BMW is working on laser-powered headlights that could debut in vehicles "within a few years," the German automaker announced Tuesday.

"After LED technology, laser light is the next logical step in car light development," the company said in a statement.

The laser diodes powering the next generation of headlights will have an intensity that is 1,000 times greater than conventional light-emitting diode, or LED, technology but consume only half the energy.

Laser diodes will also be about 100 times smaller than the small, square-shaped LED cells.

While it would theoretically be possible for BMW to reduce the size of headlights using laser diodes, the carmaker says it currently has no plans to do that.

Instead, "the size advantages could be used to reduce the.... Article continues at link

I cannot think of a more pointless, idiotic goal in the world of automobile engineering. Are oncoming drivers supposed to wear welding helmet lensed glasses at night? WTF.

Even normal Xenon headligh systems now have different patterns for different driving situations (speeds, environments) that help reduce blinding oncoming traffic.

I'm sure laser/led can do an even better job.

Each bump of headlight performance has produced more & more glare to oncoming traffic. Even insanely managed beams from lights 1000x brighter than LEDS is still going to be many many times more glaring than LEDs are. They're not literal lasers....
