The original Volkswagen Beetle sold over 21.5 million cars worldwide, with almost a quarter of those sales coming from the United States. More recently, our roads have been clogged with the 1998-2011 "Type 1C" New Beetle. We have our lingering opinions on the merits of that outgoing car, but regardless, it sold 1.2 million units globally – a figure not to be sniffed at. That said, if we're being honest, it was never a particularly serious and significant car for its times, despite all of the initial hubbub. We always wanted much, much more from a model whose original had succeeded in marking an entire era of rebellion and liberation. To be honest, though, we in the U.S. have been hoping for much, much more from Volkswagen as a company since long before the New Beetle.

Well, we're finally getting some of what we've been asking for. Volkswagen North America has Wolfsburg's undivided attention at last, and this "A5" Beetle is targeted squarely at the U.S. market. How will it resonate with 21st-century American buyers? Can it rival the Mini Cooper? Supplant the love we're cultivating for the Fiat 500? Steal sales from larger volume and less image-heavy cars like the Ford Focus and Mazda3? So much is yet to be discovered.

What we can now definitely tell you is that this latest Beetle is finally a driver's car – or at least about 80 percent more so than the New Beetle ever was.

The look is more masculine which might help get a few more guys to buy it. Unfortunately VW has been extremely lazy with the 2.0T. How long can they get away with the same power out of the 2.0T. The turbo model should easily be at 240hp+ which would leave enough room for an R version that should be at 280hp+.

I still wouldn't buy one, but I really like the looks of this one a lot more especially the interior.

I'm kinda torn about whether or not I like this design.

On one hand I think the thicker C-pillar and panel between the roof and door line doesn't look too great but on the other hand I really like the profile of the windows. The window profile has a shape which is very reminiscent of a Porsche.

The cut line on the rear of the door doesn't seem to flow or follow any of the other body lines but again the overall shape of the door is very Porsche-like and attractive.

I like the upper interior dash portion which stretches from driver to passenger side and includes the vents and the in dash screen but I'm not crazy about the lower center stack portion which contains the HVAC dials. I wonder what it would look like if the HVAC section was pushed further towards the firewall under the upper dash section creating an almost floating effect for the upper section?
Research is what I am doing when I don't know what I am doing.

I love the early 60's Beetle. Never liked its successor. And this one reminds me quite a bit of the PT Cruiser, which isn't good.

My on-again, off-again 3rd car in the stable idea is back on with this car, for some reason, not sure why but I'm real intrigued, its certainly rid of the only a chick would drive that car look.

I think other colors look better than the silver shown here, even the extremely car picky wife wants to see in person and take it for a test drive.
