Daimler AG to reintroduce the Maybach brand

    http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/maybach...vived-mercedes

Daimler AG are planning to reintroduce the Maybach brand to compete in the luxury sector against Rolls-Royce and Bentley and to differentiate against the Mercedes-Benz brand in the premium sector.

    I guess it's official then.

    Late October:

I don't usually like the idea of dredging up "Heritage" names, but perhaps Cadillac would consider using "Fleetwood" for a range of upper end, bespoke trim Omega cars.

    .. or maybe "Talisman"?

If first you don't succeed, try, try again.

The article wasn't very detailed as to their exact plans, but a stretched S Class with more luxuries sounds exactly like the Maybach they discontinued a year or two ago. In my eyes, if they want Maybach to succeed it needs to have different styling than a "plebian" Mercedes (not that I can afford one).

In other 1962 news, Ford plans to reintroduce the Edsel nameplate on a stretched Galaxie 500 sedan.

Re: Daimler AG to reintroduce the Maybach brand

It's not new news that a Pullman was coming. Also not new that Daimler was looking to revive the Maybach nameplate as a Mercedes.
This could be confirmation, to an extent.

The problem with the last Maybach was that it cost way too much to have less technology than the S-Class. It did sit on the older S-Class platform, after all. And the design wasn't anything to write home about, especially after Rolls and Bentley started upgrading the luxury and style in their cars.

I was considering one, but I think I'll buy an airplane and a submarine instead.

Didn't I read somewhere that the US Navy had a decommissioned aircraft carrier on sale for $1? Perhaps you could get that??? Though you will need to provide your own staff of 5,000. Nor do I believe the previous owner will provide you will a free tank of fuel as a thanks for buying.

You'd be the coolest person showing up at your next high school reunion in an aircraft carrier (assuming you went to school on the coast).

I disagree. Many wrote home about it. Mostly to call it ugly, and that it was. Call me old fashioned, but I think a car that is priced far above the median price for a home in this country should be a thing of beauty. The Maybach never had a chance, even against older Rolls/Bentleys. All that money harvested from Chrysler, wasted.

I think Landaulet was one of the most beautiful Maybachs they made.
It was also $1.4M base MSRP -- before any additions.
Of course they never had a chance against Rolls.

No one would buy a car like this for daily use. Its utterly ridiculous. Plus its really an S Class in so many ways. Badge Engineering and lack of unique styling killed Maybach.
They need to go to a completely separate Design language that has no Mercedes overtones. But Designers over there are completely incapable of that type of risk.

Agreed. You can't even hope to play in this segment with an obvious rebadge (yet still tweaked to make it look dumpier and dated vs. it's cheaper version). The 1970's 2-toning was atrocious; might as well have offered a padded vinyl top, too.

Daimler AG is soon or later going to be bought by the Chinese, or an American outfit (Tesla) if not Tata or Mahindra. Its only a Matter of time. They could do so much with the Smart brand.

Actually build Corollas or something like Mini. But Nooooo.. They keep wasting resources in this sort of Maybach nonsense.

Daimler (and Toyota) both own a minority stake in Tesla. Tesla is way too small to be doing any major acquisitions.
Tata will not be doing any acquisitions. If anything, they'll be folded into a division of JLR, as JLR is making all the money.
Mahindra is too small time outfit to do anything.

Daimler is a very vast operation. Mercedes is merely a component of it.

I didn't say Landaulet was a practical car. I'm saying that it's a very expensive car.

You don't buy Landaulet for "daily use." You are chauffeured in it.
of course it's an S-Class. The problem is, that it's a W140 S-Class, which in someways was a good thing, since the W220 and W221 had quality issues. But it is old. And it reflected too much Mercedes design language.
And the technology was, for the most part dated.
