CONFIRMED: VW Polo coming to U.S.

    Autoblog:

    http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/16/c...ng-to-the-u-s/

Looks like the Fit and Yaris will in a crowded segment someday with this and the Fiesta coming in 2010.

According to Automotive News, Volkswagen has determined that Americans might like a Polo, so it's bringing the 80-hp subcompact Stateside in the not-too-distant future. Until now, the importation of the Polo was all conjecture, but now we have confirmation, straight from the horse's mouth. No specifics were given about the diminutive hatchback's U.S. debut, but Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby confirmed they think the time is right. The automaker feels that Americans are more open to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles following the summer of high gas prices and the struggling economy.

The car, which would slot in between the Toyota Yaris and the larger Honda Fit in size, could be built at the company's plant in Puebla, Mexico. Although they've never sold anything smaller than the Rabbit/Golf in the States, VW thinks the Polo could help them reach their goal of tripling U.S. sales over the next ten years. The latest genereation of the Polo is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, but it's unclear if we will be getting that model or its predecessor. We just hope the Polo GTI version is in the cards.

This will replace the Fit as the most-overpriced subcompact, even without the Fit's dealer markup.

Next time on Autoblog: we hire somebody who knows even a tiny bit about cars, especially those sold in the US.

I hope it gets offered with a diesel at some point when it comes to NA.
It's nice to see that some automakers are willing to provide more choice in the subcompact/compact premium market. Not all cars of this size need to be cheap, decontented, economy cars.

Why would VW bring the expensive Polo here while the new Brazilian Gol/Voyage would not only better suit US tastes, but would cost less?

At first, I was like "awww...no picture!", then I clicked the link and realized it looks exactly like a 7/8 size Golf.

    Go figure...

because Americans and Canadians would b**** about how were getting the cheap knock off.

I bet VW with its ambitious goal of selling so many new cars at some point wants to make damn sure that they offer the best in the NA domestic market. Plus, the Fit and other new subcompacts are really good.

I just hope what we see in Geneva isnt a mini Golf like before. Even though we all know it will be.

VW can use the the german TV ad "We want Peter" to introduce the Polo.

At first I wanted to rebuke you, but then I thought this does make sense in the price-conscious North American-market. It could majorly undermine GM's cultivated "premium status", but it could work against the Versa, Aveo and Yaris.

There are two problems I can see:

    1. Safety - is it really designed to get five stars in Western-world crash tests, or to cost only as much as Brazilians can pay for it?

    2. Interior:

I think the Golf-ish look does well for the Polo, especially the pics of it on the autoblog link. It's definitely the least cheap looking (a slight jump above the Fit). I'm curious how it'll be priced compared to the bigger Rabbit, as well as the Fit.
