BMW Stuck In The Snow? Guess Which End Your Chains Go On...

Back in the day, buying a BMW was something only true sports sedan fanatics understood. But the legendary 2002 is long gone--35 years now--and all sorts of new folks are buying Bimmers.

Including those, apparently, who think their BMW 1-Series has front-wheel drive.

Earlier this year, CEO Norbert Reithofer revealed that no fewer than 80 percent of 1-Series buyers believed their beloved BMWs were pulled around corners from the front. The paramedics are still cleaning up the heart attacks in Munich.

    Now comes photographic proof.

Our U.K. reader Andy 'Smuffy' Smith sent us this photo, showing a BMW 1-Series with chains mounted on the front wheels. Which won't help it on snowy roads since, like every BMW to date, it's the rear wheels that are driven by the engine--and are the ones that are supposed to get chains for better traction.

The photo was taken yesterday in Staffordshire, one of the many areas of England that's been hit by cold, snowy weather unusually early this winter.
We just wonder if the hapless 1-Series driver even noticed that his (or her) BMW wasn't driving any better with chains on than it did without them ....

So really they'd have no issue with calling the new FWD BMW the 1 Series because people already think its FWD.

You'd think people would ask about that or something when they buy it.

    Royal English fail.

Granted I had a friend verify with me that his Elantra was not rear wheel, because he was reading a post online about RWD 2010 Elantras.

I can imagine peolpe are not used to a compact car with RWD. Typically 1-series buyers are drawn from other brands, which in that size would have FWD.

BTW, workshops repeatedly put the rear wheels of my 70 Eldorado on the rollers for the standard break test or carburator tuning and repair I had done. I imagine how it would've pulled the chains out of the floor if I wouldn't have noticed it and corrected the technician.

A lot of people are shocked when I tell them that my CTS is rear wheel drive.

Betcha that BMW driver tells all his friends what a difference chains make in the snow, too!
Someone here was asking me and I can't even remember, are chains legal in Canada and/or the US?

Varies from state to state in the US, but are required in some for certain mountain passes.

I think this is all a lot more simple than most people want to realize. First, most people don't care which wheels power their car. Most people don't know. And most people relate small cars to front wheel drive.. The deal - is not big.

I LOVE that this happened in the UK.

Can you imagine the reaction if this were in the US?
