    BMW 528 i

So, the 740 is in for an extended service visit. They picked it up and left me with a 2016 528i. I have to say, i am impressed. That 4 banger has some juice. 240 HP and it feels like it all hits you in the lower RPMs. It's smoother than i expected, as well. I told my wife that had i known the 5 series would be so much fun, i would have considered it. Probably with the inline 6, though. One problem, though. Not enough storage.

We had one last year as a rental when we drove from San Francisco to Napa. The shifter was a little goofy to me (used to Audi and Infiniti) but otherwise it felt solid and the engine did well off the line. I think the engine is under rated, as goes the case with most of the german engines.

As an F30 320i owner, I agree with jry and CJH that BMW's N20 engine is probably underrated. In the 320i, it feels more responsive than its power rating of 'only' 180 hp would suggest.

I love the N20 engine's smooth and free revving nature, too. I think it sets the benchmark for all turbo four cylinder gasoline engines in terms of performance, efficiency, and refinement.

They making new chassis out of aluminum instead of steel that good for 10% less weight! That means with a 4 cylinder which also is less weight then a 6 or 8, it has less weight to move and thru, has the torque and does not need the horsepower to move the car!

I'm sure the turbo 4 is a really nice motor, but for me there is just something magical about the BMW inline 6 that would be hard for me to give up.

Oh, i agree, Impala. The 4 was a surprise, but not anything i would buy. Back when i was writing, i had a 735 for a week. It wasn't fast off the line, but man, that thing would just cruise at 100MPH. Their TT I6 is tops.
I am hoping that they sort these goofy problems out.

BMW I6's are sublime. I am saddened that they are no longer the bread and butter engine they used to be (vs the I4T that is showing up in everything).

Well, the I4T being standard just allows them to charge a little more for the I6T.
