    Bentley GT Speed

    Bentley GT Speed

    Verdict 4/5

The GT Speed certainly lives up to its name with crushing straight line acceleration, whenever you feel the need. Firmer suspension means the big Bentley handles itself surprisingly well in corners, but it's not nearly as nimble as the Aston Martin Vanquish. Set the suspension to comfort though, and it can do something the Aston can't - waft along in near silence and ultimate comfort. If you're already a fan of the Continental GT, you'll like this car even more.
    .
Boasting an amazing 205mph top speed and a blistering 4.0 seconds 0-60mph time, the big Brit now has serious supercar-rivalling credentials. At the heart of this high performance makeover is tuned version of the firm’s familiar twin turbocharged 6.0-litre W12.
    .
Engineers have increased the power output to 616bhp, which is 49bhp improvement over the standard car, while torque swells from a muscular 700Nm to a crushing 800Nm.
    .
As you’d expect, the Continental GT Speed delivers blistering acceleration, with the revised powerplant pulling relentlessly from idle all the way to the 6,000rpm redline.
    .
This improved performance isn’t just down to the engine, because the Speed GT also features the firm’s new eight-speed gearbox, which first appeared in the cheaper Continental GT V8. Developed by transmission specialists ZF, the close ratio unit serves-up slick, relaxing shifts in auto mode, and quick-fire changes via the steering column-mounted paddles.
    .
In an effort to tame the newcomer’s ferocious pace and deliver sharper handling, Bentley has also tweaked the Speed GT’s chassis. There are firmer air springs, stiffer suspension bushes and uprated anti-roll bars, plus the self-levelling system maintains a 10mm lower ride height.
    .
On the road, the Speed feels even more agile than the standard car, and with the suspension in its Sport setting it responds more quickly to your inputs, displaying strong grip and decent body control. It’s still a big and heavy machine, but even on tight and twisty roads it inspires huge confidence, helped in no small part by the standard four-wheel drive system, which provides almost unbreakable all-weather traction. And while the steering lacks feedback, it’s precise and well-weighted.

    Bentley PR via TopSpeed(excerpts):
    .
Powered by Bentley’s iconic 6-litre twin-turbo W12 engine, the GT Speed develops 625 PS (616 bhp) at 6000 rev/min – up 50 PS versus the standard Continental GT - with 800 Nm (590 lb.ft) of torque available from 2000 to 5000 rev/min (up 100 Nm) for instantly accessible high performance. Coupled with a new ZF eight-speed close-ratio automatic transmission and state-of-the-art engine management software, the GT Speed despatches the zero-to-sixty sprint in 4.0 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.2s), reaching 100 mph (160 km/h) from a standing start in just 9.0 seconds. In-gear acceleration is equally breath-taking.
    .
In the Bentley Speed tradition, outstanding performance is matched by an enhanced chassis with up-rated springs, anti-roll bars and bushes, a lowered ride height (by 10mm front and rear) together with re-tuning of the electronically controlled damping and steering systems.
    .
The combination of the new transmission and the uprated engine results in breath-taking supercar performance. The sprint from 0-60 mph takes just 4.0 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds) and the relentless acceleration continues to a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h). 0-100 mph is dispatched in a mere 9.0 seconds – a level of performance akin to the previous generation Continental Supersports, and almost a full second quicker than the updated 575 PS Continental GT.

Longitudinal powertrain Audi vehicles with quattro are indistinguishable from RWD vehicles with Full-Time AWD; both meet the criteria to be labeled RWD/AWD - to argue otherwise is a “logical fallacy” (argumentum ad logicam). Hidden Content

Styling likes and dislikes are personal. I'll take the other side, I like the Bentleys. Definitely on my Power Ball win list of cars.

I think an Audi S5 is much nicer looking and I would buy it over this, but to me the Bentleys do look good/different and they have a nice presence on the road.

I like the other Bentleys. I've just never been a fan of the fast-back styling.

I understand, this is one of the very few fastbacks I like or feel is attractive. There are several, BMW and Honda to name two, that IMO are a blight on the landscape.

From a mechanical point of view anything that weighs over two tons and performs as it does is impressive.

Kinda looks like a big two door LaCrosse. Exactly why Buick could use a big coupe Riviera.

I love the Mulsanne and Continental Flying Spur, this is my 3rd choice though as far as new cars go.

I think they look ok, I dont know if this is the one without rear seats, but I think that "over-sporting" these cars is kinda wrong, taking out the rear seats in a 5000lb Bentley coupe isn't going to make it a race car, it goes against the mission that cars like this were created for, luxury GT touring, class and comfort with good performance.
