    Audi's Five-Door A1 Unveiled

    Audi's Five-Door A1 Unveiled
    Autocar
    November 18, 2011
    by Steve Cropley

Audi has unveiled the promised five-door version of its A1 supermini, and plans to have it in UK showrooms early in 2012. Called Audi A1 Sportback, the five-door is identical in size and style to the three-door, but designers have found an extra 6mm in both height and width, which they say improves rear-seat room, one of the few major points of criticism in the three-door.

The Audi A1 was an instant success when launched late last year, exceeding a planned annual sales rate of around 18,000 cars. The company believes volume should increase further with the launch of the Audi A1 Sportback, which should eventually account for about 70 per cent of total sales.

That's a pretty funky, dare I say cute, little vehicle. I quite like it.

This is weird, but I can tell if I love or hate the angry head and tail lamps. The overall shape is kind of meh to me, and I do like the interior.

Kind of reminds me of when a cute girl tries to get angry and upset. You can see anger in their face but you can't really take them serious because their so cute and make you want to smile.

    Audi A4 - Trunk = Audi A1

What's up with the two tone?

I love that car. I'd have a tough time deciding Mito or A1 if I was buying a small upmarket car.

    Re: Audi's Five-Door A1 Unveiled

I can't say that I am in love with it in its entirety. The two tone color scheme is sort of odd, and the shape of the roof is very unattractive. The body portion of the car is a fairly attractive shape, but above the beltline it all falls apart.

I've been driving some A3's and Golfs around recently with zipcar, and even though people don't really take care of the cars very well, I have been finding that the transmissions are crap in these. The A3, with the S tronic transmission is nice when it is working properly, but the one that I was driving today, with only 30,000 miles on it, was bucking in first gear. It wouldn't make me very comfortable if I were buying one for myself...

The golfs that I have been driving are the basic 2.5 with tiptronic/sport mode automatic also had a similar bucking issue. The ones that I was driving that did not display this problem had a very sluggish start, it made you feel like you had to floor the thing to get it moving from a stop (and this is just normal, every-day driving, not me trying to see how quickly I can get to 60).

I love the interior, but... I dunno, at first impression, I see "toy car."

I like the 3 door better, but they don't offer either with Quattro, a big mistake.

Honestly I will say Audi came up with the open front design first - Mitsubishi adopted it but flipped the opening upside down (small to large trapezoid).

BUT Audi's were always fluidic cars and rounder - just recently they started geting edgier/leaner like Mitsubishi so I would say thats one point in their direction

    I'd call it a tie.

Although now with the new Mazda tribute - It looks like Mazda is following heavy suit.

Once again, we're polar opposites when it comes to car design, it seems! If the Mito is bleah, I'm hard pressed to find a small car that isn't...
