Itís no secret that the revival of the Maybach brand by Mercedes parent company Daimler has been a flop. Perhaps itís because of how much the cars shared with their S-Class counterparts, but apart from the odd Russian oligarch, the worldís wealthiest folks have decided to stick with faithful British brands like Bentley and Rolls-Royce when it comes to their ultra-luxury needs.

The ability of British brands to built true luxury cars has apparently not gone unnoticed by Daimler and according to a report by the Financial Times, Daimler may source Aston Martin to build the next generation of Maybach models.

In exchange, Aston Martin would reportedly get access to engine technology from Mercedes-Benz, something AM desperately needs as its 6.0-liter V12 engine (used in almost every vehicle it sells) is quickly becoming outdated.

A Daimler spokesman has denied the report, but did comment that the lines of communication between the two automakers is open. This comes as no surprise as Aston Martinís Lagonda concept (which debuted at the Geneva Auto Show two years ago) was based on the Mercedes GL platform.

While still mostly a rumor, the story doesnít have any obvious holes in it with Daimler eager to partner with other automakers (including recent agreements with Renault/Nissan/Infiniti), while Aston Martin is no doubt eager to find a large partner to offset costs, especially with rivals like Ferrari being owned by Fiat and Lamborghini by Volkswagen.

From engine collaboration to this? Interesting, if true.

Could you explain? Neither Aston nor Bentley nor Rolls is Tata-owned.

    Very true.

However, there is still continued rumors that JLR wants to revive Daimler.

Hopefully, because the XJ rebadge was a stupid idea. So many British ultra-luxury brands here or potentially coming ... Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lagonda, Daimler ... and so on. What about my Spanish Hispano Suiza brand? Heck if VW dumps Seat maybe they could use that ultra-luxury brand.

'Merica needs her Duesie back too.

There were rumors of Deusenberg coming back as well. But I don't know what happened to that.
If GM ever got its ducks (merlettes?) in a row, Cadillac would be ultra-luxury brand. It's GM's own fault they managed to lose that halo after the 1950's. But whatever.

Yes. The XJ rebadge was a bad idea. What JLR could do is launch the XJ Vanden Plas model globally -- complete with scalloped grille, and super-high-end interior. And then down the road, they can launch Daimler with an entirely new car (or heavily derived from XJL). So long as it isn't a rebadge.

The Duesenberg plans are off last I heard, and that's no surprise really. Frankly I wasn't too keen on the pinnacle of American luxury brands having rebodied Mercedes-Benzes. I love MB, but Duesenberg should never be based on a foreign product just like no MB should be, say, a rebodied American car.

You're right about Cadillac too. Cadillac's base car would ideally be an S-Class, and not a base S-Class. Buick would be where Cadillac is today, and actually better since they'd have a flagship.

As for Daimler, I'd like to see it launched in certain areas of Asia and South America, plus all of Europe and North America. Ideally IMO it would be a more traditional sedan in its shape than the XJ is, and larger. A high-output version of the blown V-8 should be the only engine, maybe upped to 6.0-liters. Daimlers were always a bit more restrained in persona than a Jaguar or Bentley, never as racey. Very Maybach/Mercedes, not Bentley/Aston. So considering current Jags lean towards the latter, they had better mind their Ps and Qs.

It's all in the design and styling. Mr. & Ms. Maybach. No true charisma, no feel for understated luxury. Would they have looked like the RR Phantom and RR Ghost, then there shouldn't be any problem in selling them.
