Apple developing a car navigation system?

According to a German Magazine, Apple is developing a car navigation system for Mercedes's exclusive use for 6 months. Rumored to come out in 2009.

Since Apple is normally tight lipped, if this is true this had to come from a source within Mercedes. Take it for what it is worth.

    Oh great, iNav.

I could see how they would make the IU simpler and better iPod/iPhone integration.

    I guess it makes sense?

Re: Apple developing a car navigation system?

Thats nice and all, but they could just put a program on iphone.

Better yet they could become a real pioneer and setup an interface such that the iphone's screen is displayed on the center screen, complete with touch controls and navigation.

Could you imagine, the ability to do everything iphone can do, plus navigation with iphone's ergonomics, music, internet through the center screen?

Would Cadillac go for it? Probably not, too much protection for onstar and too much lost navigation sales, but I bet - if GM could see through their beancounters it would be a huge plus. They could sell full iphone integration for easily $500+ and that would cover the cost of the touchscreen and controller plus major profit. Plus, customers are demanding the center screen anyway even without nav - and it could, done properly, help ergonomics on other systems.

Navigation should go the way of the cellphone. First, it was separate car phone and cell phone, now no one would dream of that. Nav should be the same. My personal device should do it all - then integrate with everything!

The one thing Apple does better than anything else is UI. And the UI of most vehicle navigation / control interface systems is pretty lousy, at least compared to what Apple does in that area.

I concur, Apple does the best UI ever. This iNav will come as a breath of fresh air, compared to all the complicated nav sys current lux cars have.

Great, now we can pay twice as much for something that doesn't work as well! Apple is great at products like that!

this is insteresting - I heard it about 15 months back with reference to the whole DCX .. I wonderred which part of the unmerger continues with it ..

I also assumed they would simply use the iPhone - the iPhone WILL have navigation capability ...

Good for Mercedes-Benz - they actually need a navigation system with a good, quick interface!

2007 BMW 328i. Black sapphire metallic. Terra leather. Poplar wood. Automatic trans. Xenon adaptive headlights. BMW Assist. Bluetooth. Premium package. Heated seats. iDrive navigation system. Rear sonar. Comfort access. LOGIC7 surround sound. Sirius. 18" BMW wheels. Rear spoiler.

2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara Luxury. Black onyx pearl. Beige leather. 4WD. Chrome hood vents, mirror covers, exhaust. Silver grille, taillight trim. Brushed metal bumper protector. Running boards.

I would not buy a navigation unit from Apple. It would keep telling you to turn left.

Nope it wouldn't - it'd keep asking if you want to stop at the nearest rave or pub; in the words of 'PC' ''completely immature''

Did anyone else freak when they saw the cut-off title on the index page that read 'Apple developing a car....'?

Good for Mercedes!! I'll definitely keep an eye out on this.
Fat chance ever finding this in a GM vehicle. THere's GM's NIH syndrome... plus 95% of GM cars aren't trendy enough to warrant any of Apple's attention. And GM will always be on the trailing edge of innovation and anything trend setting.

So, if this rumor is true... forget about it ever appearing in a GM vehicle.

Because Steve Jobs is a typical self-loathing, hate America first, liberal.

Maybe Apple did offer it to GM like they offered Verizon the iPhone first. But, GM like Verizon didn't want to give that much control to Apple and Mercedes did?

PS: Hoosier, why did you have to bring politics into this thread?
