Spied: 2018 Ford F-150 With a New Engine

On sale since late 2014 as a 2015 model, the Ford F-150 is now due for its midcycle face-lift and upgrades. The prototypes in our photos show that the F-150 will likely get a moderate design update to the front and rear, and to the headlights and taillights.

"The bigger news might be under the hood as the F-150 will finally get the 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel that has been rumored for some time. The 5.0-liter V-8 will likely also be updated. And our reports have both slated to be mated to Ford's new 10-speed automatic transmission.

"We're also hearing that sometime around the mid-2018 time frame, the F-150 will get another major powertrain update when a 3.5-liter-based V-6 hybrid powertrain will finally make its debut."

Nice. I hope they up the tow rating a bit over the Ram Ecodiesel, up to gas tow ratings. Then Ram will increase theirs with the new model, etc. etc.... Then we'll have a good selection of 1/2 ton diesels. I really like the concept of the Ecodiesel and the MPG, but the 7k tow rating was hard to swallow.

There lies the problem. GM had a diesel in a 1/2 ton for years. 30 MP/ImpG, it would move the truck but little else. Go 400,000 km's before any serious break downs (Stanadyne Inj. Pump). But then it became "Bigger, Faster, Strong war" Now a 2017 F 450 Platinum Towing King can be stickered at over $100,000 CDN $$$s.

Need to tow more? I heard Freightliner has done some great updates for 2017.

Which GM diesel? The only one I recall was the non-turbo dog in the 80's/90's... it was worthless. The new turbo-diesels are much better. There's got to be something that can bridge the gap between the 3.0 turbo-diesels, and the Nissan 5.0 turbo-diesel, at least for tow-capacity. The 7k in the Ecodiesel was just too low to be useful for me, 9k lbs would be a good compromise.

How are Ford's newer diesels? I know the 7.3L was exceptional but everything since has been pretty much garbage right?

the 3.2L T5 in the Transit and Ranger are good and the JLR V6 has bean OK as far as I have heard
and the "pretty much garbage" post 7.3L are made by Navistar and last I heard FORD is STILL SUING them over those engines
the ford built 6.7 has bean good

They had the 6.5TD in the 1/2 tons up until '98.

The 6.7L has had a few issues, but seems to be on par with the current Duramax and Cummins offerings and is head and shoulders above the Navistar 6.4L.

The 6.4L PSD is the only engine I'd refer to as total garbage. I refuse to buy them.

9K lbs, is nearing the limit of a 1/2 ton. Yes they are rated up to 12,000 lbs, but anything 9000 and over really should be done with a 3/4 ton.

I think a 1/2 ton is fine if you pull 12K once in a while. If you're pulling that much weight regularly, you should move up to a 3/4 ton.

I'm referring to moving the manufacturer suggested towing weight, not what I'll actually tow. The max I'd actually tow is a 4k lb car, on a 2-3000 lb trailer, that maxes me on a 7k tow rating immediately. 9k tow rating gives me 2k lbs of cushion.

Saw a 2500 Denali with a D-max at my local dealer the other day.

$90,000 on the sticker. I just about crapped myself!

    Re: Spied: MCE'd 2018 F-150 Diesel

We recently caught Ford testing a slew of diesel-powered F-150 prototypes and captured the first engine shots, along with loads of other details to prove it.

"As engineers were going about their work on the F-Series diesel prototypes, details presented themselves to our cameras. We watched as an apparent wiring issue got the attention of several engineers, and they were finally forced to prop open the F-150's hood, revealing the new engine for the first time. The test group was accompanied by a Range Rover Sport, further supporting the latest evidence that it's the Range Rover's 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel engine that will be put to work in the F-150.

"We also caught the X-TR prototype with its gas door open, revealing Ford's capless fueling system, rendered in the classic green associated with diesel fuel. Closer inspection confirmed that this capless fuel filler was meant for diesel.

"A peek at the F-150's interior also revealed a placard taped to the dashboard that instructed: 'Diesel Fuel Only.' More instructions detailed the test instrumentation, including which warning would be signaled if the urea level was low or if there were problems with the particulate filters. Finally, we note what looked like an added gauge on the A-pillar, possibly a pyrometer or boost readout.

"We watched the F-150 diesels hit the roads for test runs, and we confirmed that the models will have stop-start technology, further enhancing their fuel-efficiency. The dash placard also mentioned stop-start."
