Rumor Mill: Lincoln Aviator to Return on D6

Like the old 2002-05 Aviator, the new one would be based off of a Ford Explorer, The Truth About Cars learned from speaking with an unnamed second-hand source. The claim appears to be backed by the recent filing of the Aviator trademark at the US Patent and Trademark office.

The source also claims that there are no plans for a next-generation Flex or its chassis-mate, the Lincoln MKT. The Aviator would likely replace the MKT altogether as a large crossover in the lineup.

Re: Rumor Mill: Lincoln Aviator to Return on D6

D6 only makes sense if they can use it for a host of longitudinal RWD applications, namely the next generation of Lincoln sedans and the Mustang. Even relatively well-executed FWD cars like the Continental concept (and the stubby and poorly-proportioned MKC) will not get consideration in the legitimate luxury space, plus the Mustang shouldn't be burdened with a half-baked and expensive chassis like S550. What doesn't make sense is developing D6 solely for the likes of the Explorer and Aviator because the benefits of a RWD CUV chassis aren't justified compared to a traverse CUV in that segment. The Durango and GC do fairly well in the market, but without sharing the W166 with MB, they likely couldn't support such a unique chassis. The benefits of RWD are much less critical in luxury CUVs compared to luxury sedans, the cost of which can't be justified over the current strategy. That said, architectures are so modular now that Ford would be insane not to do this, despite their seemingly cursed ability to manage luxury brands.

Developing a RWD platform that could be used for sedans, crossovers, and sport cars would result in something like the platform used for most of Infiniti's cars and the Nissan Z. However, I wouldn't be surprised if D6 ends up being a LWB version of CD4 used for a 7 seat Explorer and Aviator, and everything is FWD/AWD. Most of Infiniti's sales revenue comes from the large QX80 and JX crossover.

I think this is a reach, especially when we consider the weight reduction coming with Navigator.
On that point, the length and width of the current MKT is similar to that of the current Navigator.

So with careful reworking of MKX based on Edge, a 3-row MKX is entirely possible - maybe the new Aviator.

I'd like to see an MK replacement before D6
    &
imho something could be accomplished almost immediately by using some new-MKX pieces on the Flex

Hmm. That may be a while. Many have said there was to be a Lincoln built off the Explorer, but I took it to mean sooner rather than later. How far off is the next Explorer? 3 years or so?

This doesn't surprise me AT ALL. In fact I was wondering why the MKT was even still offered. It costs money to run a factory and sales are tiny. The Flex too never did catch fire like they thought it would, though I think it's handsome myself. When it first appeared Ford made predictions of 60-80K a year if memory serves.

Is the MKX 3 row? Does Lincoln really need a MKT? Even Mercedes could sell their R Class.

^^^ The thing with the Flex is that sells really well in California, a market that Ford wants to have good presence. I say put it on a new platform and keep it as a niche vehicle, it's great having something different on your lineup.

    HAHA, did they SEE IT?

I'm most interested in the new Navigator.

Me as well, I am intrigued as to what it will end up being. Everything I have read has been good, but that hasn't always panned out in the past. Hope they go with an adjustable air suspension like RR/GL/LX.

I think its a no-brainer to bring back the Aviator on the Explorer chasis if they are indeed going back to names. I think people generally have a good memory of it, even if it didn't last as long as the Navigator has.

X is 2 rows but there is a larger Edge they sell in China that's 3 rows so they could theoretically but I am guessing 3rd row is extremely cramped.

tho this isn't how I formed my opinion
it works out that I only want (real) Names on Lincolns that top-out over $70k ...or more

    as Andrew answered +
    there's a huge(imho) gap/niche between the 190.0" ovl MKX

Honestly I'd have loved to see Aviator and the next Explorer return on the T6 platform. I know that won't happen, seeing as we can't even get Ranger here. I just feel that for a Utility vehicle, it's just a far better fit.

But then again I'm also not entirely sure T6 would be capable of lending itself to a luxury application.

that is the thing tho ... that is not where the market is. You may like it and a few thousands others. If Colorado continues to sell well, GM may consider the Trail Blazer, but i am not convinced it would work. The market likes these two-box minivans. So that is what they get.
