    The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has stepped up its inquiry into Ford F-150 brake problems.

    After opening an initial evaluation into reports of electric vacuum pump (EVP) failures and increased braking effort, the agency has identified at least seven crashes and 1,851 warranty claims in Ford's own data. The investigation was prompted by nearly 400 complaints submitted to the NHTSA.

    The 2011-2012 F-150 with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine uses a traditional vacuum booster to provide braking power assist, along with an EVP to maintain a consistent pedal feel.
