Lincoln EV project with Rivian canceled because of coronavirus

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. and Rivian are canceling their plan to jointly develop an electric vehicle for the Lincoln brand because of the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Lincoln informed its dealers of the decision Tuesday. Officials said the brand still planned to have its own EV eventually and could potentially co-develop a product with Rivian in the future but shelved the project because of the "current environment."

Although the pandemic has delayed numerous vehicles currently in development, including the upcoming Ford Bronco Sport crossover, this appears to be the first announcement of a vehicle cancellation in the U.S. attributed to the crisis.

"Our strategic commitment to Lincoln, Rivian and electrification remains unchanged and Lincoln's future plans will include an all-electric vehicle consistent with its Quiet Flight DNA," Lincoln said in a statement provided to Automotive News. Lincoln said it was still committed to its partnership with Rivian and would continue to work with the EV startup "on an alternative vehicle based on Rivian's skateboard platform."

Ford Motor invested $500 million in Rivian last year.

The EV developed with Rivian, announced in January, was to be Lincoln's first battery-electric model. It would have been built on Rivian's flexible skateboard platform, but neither company had provided details on what type of vehicle it would be, where it would be assembled or when it would go on sale.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe was quoted as saying the vehicle would have been "in the SUV space" and "very different" from Rivian's own R1S utility.

Lincoln has invested heavily in electrification but until now has mostly focused on plug-in hybrid models of its existing crossovers, including the Aviator and Corsair.

    Other Ford vehicles delayed

The Bronco Sport, an Escape-sized off-roader, will start rolling off assembly lines at Ford's Hermosillo, Mexico, plant Sept. 7, nearly 60 days after the original July 13 target, according to supplier information obtained by Automotive News.

It's unclear how the virus has impacted other vehicles, including the upcoming Bronco SUV, F-150 pickup and Mustang Mach-E crossover.

Ford CEO Jim Hackett, speaking last month on a Detroit radio station, said the virus was not likely to have a significant impact on the launch of some of Ford's biggest models.

"It's had an effect, but it's not going to dampen our spirits about how all these great new things have to come to market," Hackett said. "If they're a month or six weeks late, I don't think anyone would think we fumbled there because of the virus."

That is interesting. My thought is you don't cancel future product because of the coronavirus, you cancel it either to conserve cash or you think the post coronavirus market will not support the product. Or, they felt what was planned wouldn't sell coronavirus or no coronavirus.

I wonder if they are worried about Rivian, my guess is this new Lincoln moves to the Mach E platform.

Could be, it might be hard for these startup companies to get funding in this Coronavirus world and Ford, like everyone else, is being very careful with how their cash is going to be deployed.

Re: Lincoln Rivian co-developed SUV canceled due to coronavirus

Ford and Lincoln were developing a premium midsize EV Crossover before the Rivian tie-up and that's obviously still on track and what Lincoln is referring to. It's based on a 2nd-gen EV architecture spun-off from the Mach E.

Honesty the Rivian tie-up never made sense in that context. Lincoln was poised to have two premium EV Crossovers, presumably the Rivian was larger and more premium. Unfortunately that program was also delayed into 2024 so it's going to be a wait for Lincoln's first BEV, although that delay happened before Corona.

I think blaming Corona virus is something of a stretch, but I'm sure they have low tolerance for risk right now.

I don't know about Corona virus but oil futures going below zero might have had something to do with this decision.

I'm tending to think it's an easy way out and they're using Covid-19 as a scapegoat.

I don't believe Ford blamed Covid. I do like the idea of Lincoln using their own platform much better, and letting Ford co-develop instead.

The whole Rivian Investment was ill advised anyway as an effort to match GM's many years headstart in Ultium chemistry research as well as Electric vehicle lead and autonomy including Cruise and Cadillac's onstar supercruise...

They should have demanded control over Rivian like GM did, now if Rivian is in trouble, GM could pick em up for pennies on ze yuan...

You sound like you know a lot more than you are sharing, elaborate.

Why would GM want Rivian is they are already way ahead?

If Honda cancels it's GM sourced product, will you say the same thing?

"Buying into Technology" is not new concept, on the surface it looks expensive, but paying for all the development on 5 projects, just to own the one that works, isn't cheap.
