Lincoln Ready to Ditch Alphanumeric Names, Bring Back Heritage Names

Does the Lincoln Continental mark the beginning of the end of the brand’s confusing “MK” naming scheme?

Joe Hinrichs, Ford Motor Co.’s president of the Americas, today gave the strongest hint yet that the company is ready to bring back real words, possibly by reviving iconic names such as the Town Car.

    Yes!!!

Also: It's fascinating to see how differently Cadillac and Lincoln are being run right now. We'll see who made the right moves in a few years...

"Town Car" is one of my favorite car names. Do it, Lincoln!

While I'm all for this idea, they'll have to implement it carefully. It will be easy to rename the MKZ "Zephyr", but other models, such as the MKC and MKX, will have to find new names that were never associated with those models. We already know that the MKT-successor will be called the "Aviator", so that's one down.

Very interesting, and a great way for Lincoln to show that it's really trying to do its own thing in the luxury market.

The question is now, how many storied Lincoln names are worth reviving?

I don't think it's a matter of which names are worth reviving, it's a matter of which ones will "fit". They mention the name "Town Car", but what kind of vehicle would they apply that to? The MKZ wouldn't be the right vehicle, and the Continental is going to be called the Continental.

I can see "Zephyr" being the new MKZ, "Aviator" being a new SUV, and "Town Car" being a badass flagship.

Seriously, how awesome would it be if you had a proper S Class rivaling flagship named "Town Car" to actually, ummm, go into town with?

That's definitely a possibility. Purists will say "But the Continental should be the flagship!", but for long periods of time, the Town Car was actually Lincoln's largest car. The Continental, in the 80's, 90's, and 2000's, was technically the "flagship", but the Town Car carried the Lincoln brand.

I'm totally cool with either name being used for the flagship. Both are awesome names, and both are leagues ahead of E/5/A6/CTS and S/7/A8/CT6. Aviator too, though... that's also an awesome name for a car. It just sounds cool saying you drive an Aviator.

Damn, looking back, Lincoln had some of the best names for cars. Glad to see them coming back to their senses and taking advantage of them!

I for one don't really care for the names or alpha-numeric. It's the car, no one is buying it for the name. Anyone think the ATS's fortunes would've been any different if it had a real name?

If Lincoln is going to slap heritage names on cars with Ford bones, I don't think there will be much of a difference no matter what they call them.

Genius, However I do like some of the styling of the new Lincolns, but they will not Compete with Caddy, BMW, Lexus, or MB. I see Lincoln as a Buick, and Acura alternative now.

Hey, at least they make their new vehicles look different and they don't blatantly rebadge them:

Don't take this personally BlackGTP, but yes, they use Ford bones. Big whoop. A Cadillac uses Chevy bones. Big whoop. There shouldn't be a problem with that, just as long as the vehicle itself doesn't look like the Ford or Chevy it was based on.

As long as the vehicle is differentiated enough and comes to market well equipped to fight the competition, I don't see a problem. In the case of the MKC, it looks NOTHING like its Ford sibling. The Tah... er, sorry, Escalade on the other hand, is a mediocre attempt to create a luxury vehicle. It's a straight up rebadge. At least the last generation Escalade looked somewhat different from a side view. This one? It's a dead ringer for a Tahoe.

I actually think that Town Car would be a great name for a new MKT.

    MK...Town Car
    MK...Zephyr
    MK...Superior
    MK...Cruiser
    MK...Xylophone?

That last one might be tricky...

The Town Car name applied on a crossover?!?

The MKT-replacement will be called the Aviator, which is probably more fitting with the body style.
