The Lincoln MKS is Dead, Long Live the Continental!

"Chicago Assembly Plant will phase out production of the MKS in 2016 but remains vital to our global manufacturing footprint and will continue to manufacture the Ford Taurus, Ford Explorer and Police Interceptor vehicles," Lincoln spokesman Sam Locricchio wrote in response to a query from Edmunds.

Locricchio said the MKS will be available at Lincoln dealerships as a 2016 model. It competes with the Audi A6, Lexus GS and Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans.

The 2017 Continental is slated to go into production in late spring 2016, suppliers said.

Re: The Lincoln MKS is Dead, Long Live the Continental!

The new Continental, on the other hand, will be built in Flat Rock, Michigan alongside the Mustang and select Fusion models.

Lincoln production may be returning to Michigan, according to a new report from Automotive News. While the brand's current big sedan, the MKS, is built alongside the Ford Taurus, Ford Explorer, and their Police Interceptor counterparts at the Blue Oval's Chicago, IL factory, the production version of the Continental won't be screwed together in the Windy City.

According to AN, "industry sources" claim the Continental will join the Ford Mustang and Ford Fusion – on which the big Lincoln is loosely based – at the company's Flat Rock, MI factory. The move isn't just based on convenience, though. Ford is selling a lot of Explorers, and shifting Lincoln production away from Chicago Assembly frees up production capacity for the popular SUV.

The MKS lived a pretty short life. Didn't it? I blame it on that crazy front fascia of the most recent design. It's too weird looking...

Well, the original MKS came out for MY 2009, so it's going to have an 8 MY run. That's actually a little longer than the 6 MY run Ford is looking at.

The pre-refresh MKS was a beautiful car, but the refresh killed it. The krill grille and extremely round front end did not work at all.

Re: The Lincoln MKS is Dead, Long Live the Continental!

MKS was originally supposed to be the smaller, sportier brother of a larger Lincoln sedan built on the same platform, but they never could get the engineering right for the larger car, so the MKS had to carry the water for both segments.

Throw in the general neglect of Lincoln during Ford's mid 2000's restructuring, along with the collapse of the large sedan market, and it was a recipe for disaster.

I agree whomever thought up that grill and whomever passed it it to being needs to be slapped.....repeatedly.

Wings (or is it a mustache?) on a Lincoln........really?.

I bet it will still be FWD-based and will look nothing like the concept.

The camo'd spy shots show a car that has similar dimensions to the concept. Since it's supposed to be Lincolns flagship sedan, I hope they don't screw it up.

I hope I lose my bet. But I'm a cynic. Too many times we were supposed to get something great only for the production version to be a major letdown.

I still like the look of the original MKS. It hid it's awkward proportions way better than the Taurus then came the awful refresh. The only good thing about the refresh was the CCD, larger brakes, and better interior. Exterior design was disgusting.

Lincoln still hasn't learned the lesson of this car's legacy; that being you need real differentiation from Ford in this segment and price point to get consideration beyond Lincoln's shrinking pool of buyers.

A FWD Town Car was in the pipeline at one time?

Well, based on these spy shots, it looks pretty bang-on:

    http://www.caranddriver.com/news/201...ng-future-cars

It looks like the wheelbase was shortened a few inches, but the concept has a massively long wheelbase (which throws off the proportions IMO).

Agreed, specially with the ecoboost appearance pkg. It is a great buy in the used car world, actually.
