It's official: for police, the Ford Taurus and Explorer are the new Crown Vic
    The Verge
By Chris Ziegler on October 13, 2015 09:21 am

Ford announced this morning that its Police Interceptor lineup, which includes tricked-out versions of the Taurus and Explorer,
has hit 61 percent US market share. That's up from 55 percent in 2014, and just under 40 percent in 2012. Other popular polic
e vehicles include the Dodge Charger and Chevy Caprice and Tahoe, but with these numbers, the precinct is now officially
Ford's world; Dodge and Chevy are just living in it.

    Story continues at link...
A lot of PDs have switched and discovered that the Explorer based PIU suits their needs better than a Taurus based PI.
Stories coming through that places like BHP are trading in Crown Vics, Tahoes and F150s for PI Ute. Word is spreading
and more Police Departments are expected to slowly switch on the back of positive feedback from other PDs.

I was in a PIU the other night. Seats weren't that great and launches were slow at times. Otherwise it was super roomy, almost forgot about the prisoner in the back at one point.

Re: It's official: for police, the Ford Taurus and Explorer are the new Crown Vic

No surprise. After Ford magically turned the 500 into the Taurus and switched out big inside/medium outside to tiny inside/huge outside, and given that cops have more crap to carry every day--never mind the 12-pack of donuts--and that cops are bigger every day, even someone normal sized like me would be cramped in a Taurus...WITHOUT gun belt, flashlight, taser, bear spray, and extra deodorant and toofsbrush.

Unless Ford eliminates the console in the Tau, it's too small inside.

And it's OK, Fenwick, that YOU were in back. I will never tell a soul, that is our secret here at GMI, just between the two of us!
I heard they waived bail when the desk sergeant found out who you are. Congrats.

Now no more jaywalking or spitting on the sidewalk, ya heah?

Re: It's official: for police, the Ford Taurus and Explorer are the new Crown Vic

Honestly I saw a lot of Chargers a few years ago.
But I don't think I have even seen a current model (facelift) Charger cop car.

They're all Taurus and Explorer across Canada basically (at least what I've been seeing). Provincial, municipal, RCMP...

I was in the passenger seat. :P

I'll be in a Charger or Tahoe if I get hired with Florida Highway Patrol. Thinking about going county eventually though so then it'll be a Taurus PI or Explorer PI. Orange County is almost 100% Impala 9C1.

NC SHP has some new body Chargers. They're still running GMT900 Tahoes though. Raleigh PD has a bunch of new Tahoes.

The best police car selection is what the national police (Policja) in Poland have, all 5-door Kia cee'd
    inexpensive, economical, roomy and useful

these big V8's are just wasting taxpayer money and it isn't right
Police used to drive normal cars in the USA too, 30+ years ago.

Yeah I'm not going after some moron going 90+ on Florida's Turnpike in a Kia c apostrophe d. I might catch up by the time the guy retires.

Firstly you shouldn't, 90 mph is a normal speed to drive, it isn't right to bother people for that

And in Poland it is normal for people to drive 125 mph everywhere and police have no issues...

Every time someone brings up stuff like that, this is my only response. From the movie End of Watch.

You've broken the law. I did not write the law. I may even disagree with the law but I will enforce it.
Yes, 80-90 is normal for Florida highways. I am capable of driving safely at those speeds. That being said, doesn't mean it's legal. Doesn't mean I won't write you for it.

If you're unhappy with it, take it up with state legislature. Believe me I'll sign the petition to up speed limits any day.
