Ford to Suspend Output at 4 Plants, Including for F-150

DETROIT, Oct 17 (Reuters) - In a fresh sign of pressure on U.S. automakers, Ford Motor Co on Monday said it will shut down production of its best-selling F-150 pickup truck for a week at a Kansas City assembly plant, and temporarily idle three other plants over the next several weeks.

The F-150 is the best-selling vehicle model in North America, and a key profit-maker for Ford. However, sales of the overall F-series pickup model line fell nearly 3 per cent in September. Ford dealers had a heavy 95 days' supply of the pickups on their lots at the end of September, according to data compiled by Automotive News.

F-150 production at the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan will continue without interruption, Ford said.

"During our second quarter financial call, we said we expected the overall retail industry to decline in the second half of the year from the same period last year. We also said to expect to see some production adjustments in the second half - this is one of them. We continue matching production to meet demand," said Kelli Felker, Ford spokeswoman.

Ford is also suspending production of two sport utility vehicles, the Ford Escape and the Lincoln MKC, at its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky for two of the next three weeks. The compact Escape, one of Ford's most popular models, is under increasing pressure from Japanese rivals.

Ford said it also is shutting two plants in Mexico. One is a plant in Hermosillo that makes the Ford Fusion and the Lincoln MKZ sedans, and the other is in Cuautitlan that makes the Ford Fiesta small car.

Sounds like fleet sales slowdown is catching up with more than just the Mustang

RAM outsold the Silverado by 2,000 units in Sept; I wouldn't brag too much. It was a bad month for everybody, except the RAM and Jeep brands at FCA.

What has Silverado got to do with it. GM has been cutting fleets over almost 3 years now.
I am impressed that Ford chooses to idle plants instead of churning out aluminum trucks less people want. For Titan it Nissan might take a bloodbath with the new investment they just poured in if Ford is slowing its production.

Chris was telling the guy in the glass house to be careful when he throws his stones.

You didn't notice GM September fleet mix either, I take it?

It was down 15% for the month and is the only of the big three pickups down YOY.

Exactly, but GM has already taken measures to cut its dependence on fleets, which is besides the point since Ford seems to have a strategy to cut production when things do not work out. Chrysler is the odd one going all out on Discounts.
Meanwhile, Do not Forget GM has Sierra which sells tons of Denali's, so all its eggs are not in one model. Anyways, the Silverado decline is planned to be focused less and less on fleets.

We do not have to agree you know, Obviously, GM and Ford for that matter have folks that look into these things, they know cycles will come, the key is being profitable in downturns, which GM clearly has planned for, at least according to Mrs. Barrah.

Remember too that Ford did a lot more front end loading of fleet (Commercial and daily rental)
at the start of the year, so now when things begin to slow down it's time to be careful with
inventory levels, I think Ford want to work down more 2016 stock before there's too many
    '17s coming through.

This is an election year and Ford is not being bullish.

    funny

Go look at the sales reports, PR and listen to the sales calls for September, GM's rental fleet was double that of Ford's, the "cutting daily rental" story is played-out.

This is a very good point, KC just finished build-out of the 2016 last week, by idling KC, they are restricting inventory builds of 2017, with many 2016's on the lots, if you go to the Dealer and they've got dozens of both 2016's and 2017's you want a deal on the year-old model, if there isn't any (or many) 2017's, and you need/want a truck, you buy what they've got, a 2016.

FWIW: Dearborn has already been building 2017's for several weeks, Dearborn is where the Raptor is made...................

Check the dates for all of them ( the thread starter article is the worst one out there ) and remember ...... today forward...... then 23 October forward and then......

..... think along the lines of Batten down the Hatches....... for yourselves and all you hold dear........ never mind Ford 'and whatever'.
