I'm surprised how bad Ford does in China, especially Lincoln. What is wrong with this?

I recall reading that Ford's lineup in China is getting stale, while rivals such as GM, have kept their product current....

Unfortunately Ford's entire global lineup has gotten stale with Fields pushing back product development and putting the company into "coasting" mode instead of mashing the gas pedal while they were ahead/at the front of the market. Hackett apparently has been able to pull a few programs forward that were pushed back (Explorer/Aviator is one), but it'll likely be another year or two before we truly see another product push by Ford. They've also refused to increase incentives (many models have little in the way in incentives - especially Lincolns, which here have only $1000 on the hood), and have had uncompetitive lease rates. So it's been a perfect storm of stale product, few incentives, and non-competitive lease rates which don't equal good numbers. So until the next product push comes, the company will suffer through sales drops around the world, which is definitely unfortunate after they've had so much momentum the last few years.

Apparently they did re-institute the tiered/stair stepping program that was used when Mulally was around, in which dealers were rewarded with cash incentives if they pushed their sales totals up to the next tier every month (I don't know what the tier ranges are), however, unlike before, they're only targeting a few models right now. I know F-series was one of them. I think Explorer another. I can't remember the other models included in this program, but I know it wasn't anywhere near the full lineup.

A sales drop in China is pretty disconcerting. When will Lincoln begin local production?

This is a hallmark of Ford. Every time they pull themselves out of the dumps and earn some rave reviews they take their eyes off the ball and fall back into the dumps.

I think there is something else going on here; is every vehicle (outside of Continental and Navigator) stale?

All models? Just curious. Anyone know?

I don't recall where I read that, probably Business Week or the WSJ.... The only other real option is if they upset Mother China and are paying the price.

Re: Ford Repositions Business In China, February Sales Decline

“We saw sales declining in February caused in part by fewer working days, due to a Late Chinese New Year holiday this year,”
said Peter Fleet, president, Ford Asia Pacific and chairman & CEO, Ford China.
So they're fewer selling day made a reduction in sales look even worse.
“As we reposition our business in China, our key priorities for 2018 are to strengthen our core
business, improve our operational fitness and accelerate our strategic shift to capitalize on emerging market opportunities.”
Is Ford simply repeating stated goals as a way of reinforcing commitment when it has no new product in sight?

Yaddah, yaddah, yaddah but bottom line is:
Chinese buyers are going off the bite because they've seen the same products long enough.

No, it's the Ford -Zoyote Joint Venture Plant which will build electric vehicles.
    http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/201..._136808927.htm
HANGZHOU, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- A joint venture between U.S. auto maker Ford and its Chinese counterpart Zotye is expected to manufacture full electric vehicles by September 2019.

The joint venture, with an investment of 5 billion yuan (755 million U.S. dollars), will be based in the Jinhua development zone in east China's Zhejiang Province, according to an agreement signed on Thursday between the firm and the zone.

Ford and Zotye will each hold half of the joint venture's stake. The new facility is expected to produce 100,000 vehicles a year.

With regard to Lincoln production, that will be run in conjunction with Ford production as required.
my bet is that something smaller than Aviator will be built there and that most certainly will be built
in an existing plant, so will be paired with an existing platform, maybe a longer wheelbase Escape variant?

Bur definitly, the new plant is for EV joint venture.
While Ford in China is repositioning its business away from conventional ICEs to electric vehicles
but be under no illusion, Chinese regulation regarding EV sales mix is fast approaching.
