Ford to release limited edition 727-horsepower Mustangs

    Michael Martinez, The Detroit News
    4:35 p.m. EDT October 22, 2015

    Your move, Dodge.

Ford Motor Co. will release an extremely limited number of special-edition Mustang GTs that get up to 727 horsepower — 20 more than Dodge’s popular Hellcat Charger and Challenger sports cars.

The Dearborn automaker partnered with NASCAR legend Richard Petty to create three Mustang GT King Edition pony cars. Only 300 — 243 King models, 43 King Premier models and 14 King Premier convertibles — will be built. The Mustangs will range from $67,495 to $90,495 and customers can now order them through their local Ford dealerships.

“I’ve always liked the look of the Mustang, and the 2016 model gives us a great base car to work with,” Petty said in a statement. “These new King edition Mustangs are pretty much the way I’d build my own. They are great fun to drive, and have a signature single exhaust.”

The modified Mustangs use a factory GT as a base model. Petty’s speed shop, Petty’s Garage, added a supercharger to add 235 horsepower to the stock 435-horsepower 5-liter V8. Options for all three editions include different wheel bushings, a coil-over racing suspension and a supercharger upgrade that results in the 727-horsepower total.

Other modifications include a custome engine calibration, a cold-air intake for better breathing and a MagnaFlow exhaust.........

Who cares? It's Mustang built by a third party using aftermarket parts.

GM needs to make a bursting-at-the-seams 1,000 hp LT4, put it in a Corvette, Camaro, CTS-V, CT6, CT8, CT7, and Escalade and call it a day.

Throw it in a Sierra Denali for good measure.

Why wouldn't the average Ford buyer just settle for a Fiesta ST?
It's smaller, more tossable, has a full back seat, more environmentally friendly, and it fits a millennial budget.
Plus it's made in North America, keeping jobs at home.

Let's hope they do a better job of putting the power down than Shelby did:

Because they're little **** boxes with just enough power to be considered entertaining.

I guess that's Ford's answer to beating the new Camaro, pretty desperate!

    A super-limited production and super-expensive model? I don't think so.

Ford will need to get creative to blunt the Camaro's performance advantage.

Yeah BahamaTodd.. that was for HP boasting rights only for the guy who paid a MIND-BOGGLING and GOOFY $97,000 for a Mustang... a Mustang being able to tell someone how much HP he had and they, hearing that number.. just conceded the race to him without ever starting their cars. Little wold they kno.. than a base Camaro SS would beat it with almost half the HP

I'm pretty sure Dodge can massage their engine calibration and swap a slightly smaller pulley to gain 21 hp and beat the Stangs HP numbers on paper while costing thousands less.
"The car's brilliant and ... a great surprise, pleasant surprise for all Corvette lovers everywhere ... a huge shock to our competitors ... because I don't think anybody was expecting something that good. What pleases me the most about it was that ... I can say this is the first car that's come out, that was done since I left.

Built to order no doubt but also in super limited numbers...
At the moment, there's like 46 in dealer stock nation wide.

The Mustang's 5.0 is nowhere near its limit either.
Recently, Leno had one in his garage with 750 HP bolt on blower to standard 5.0 internals.
Eventually the 6.2 and 6.4 engines from GM and Chrysler are probably going to win on HP
but that may be so high that it becomes beyond the ability of most owners...

I even question the ability of most owners to need 500 hp on the road let alone +700 hp
