WASHINGTON -- The 2016 Ford F-150 SuperCab was the only full-size pickup to take home
a “good” rating among the nameplates tested in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s
    latest small-overlap crash test.

The truck earned the rating after receiving crashworthiness upgrades following a shaky performance last year.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Double-cab models of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and Toyota Tundra were rated “acceptable,”
the IIHS’ second-best rating, while crew cab models of both trucks were one notch lower,
at “marginal.” The Silverado’s results extended to its twin, the GMC Sierra 1500.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ram 1500 Quad Cab and Crew Cab models both earned a “marginal” overall rating,
which took into account a “poor” rating -- the IIHS’ worst -- for their structure.

the F150 is the ONLY truck to come out AFTER this testing started
I also thought some reinforcement was missing on the single cab F150's and that model fared badly in comparison

Or, we can read the article.

" 2015 F-150 SuperCrew -- which aced the small-overlap test last year -- had crash-protection features that weren’t present on other versions, including wheel blockers, which are tubular steel assemblies welded to the frame in front of and behind both front wheels.

A subsequent test of the SuperCab model gave it a “marginal” rating, leading the IIHS to say that the disparity “shortchanges” some Ford F-150 buyers.

For the 2016 model year, Ford responded by installing protections in the SuperCab and regular cab editions, earning praise from the IIHS. A Ford spokesman said that wheel-blocker assemblies, plus reinforcements to the truck’s rocker panels and door hinge pillars, were added to all 2016 F-150s."

"The Ram 1500’s current generation launched in 2012, the same year the IIHS began subjecting vehicles to the small-overlap crash, while the current generations of other trucks debuted later."

I don't know why Ford didn't have all safety measures on all cab configurations at get go.
Good to see that is now the case.

The small overlap test was first introduced in 2012 before new Silverado and Sierra came out.
It's now four years on from then and manufacturers should be getting on top of this.

GM and all the other brands scored badly in foot protection, so whatever Ford changed has worked a treat.

I can't help but hearing Mulally "Why are we doing it like this?" and "This is the way we have always done it." being the WRONG answer.

You can bet GM will be stung by that, crash tests are getting tougher and more exacting
so I'm wondering if GM already has a MCE update planned to improve those deficiencies.
I can't see GM letting Ford get out in front too far.

This is a magnificent feat for Ford and I think it will take a little time for all to
appreciate just how good F150 now is, it's still really at the start of this product
cycle and we're still to see all the other big improvements roll in.

Wait....that graphic doesnt have the SuperCrew Cab truck on there. Did it get tested or was it just the SuperCab truck?

    Still, marginal really sucks.

"MCE update" in addition to the one that took place 6 months ago?

Not sure the SuperCrew was tested last summer, passed with flying colors, the extended cab was the one that was problematic for 2015 and fixed for 2016.

IIHS tested 2015 F-150 SuperCrew last year, and it achieved a 'Top Safety Pick' rating, with ratings of 'Good' in all five crashworthiness evaluations. However, as mentioned in the article, 2015 F-150 SuperCab only scored marginal.

After Ford made improvements to the structure of F-150 regular and SuperCab configurations for MY 2016, IIHS re-tested the latter and Ford's revisions resulted in a 'Top Safety Pick' for SuperCab as well.

Here are detailed results 2015 F-150 SuperCrew (results apply to MY 2016 as well): http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/veh...016?print-view

Re: Ford F-150 leads pickups in IIHS' corner crash tests

Most Americans - and really, most people everywhere - don't take the time to do this kind of detailed research. How many of us knew the crash test ratings of these trucks in detail before this thread? And we're enthusiasts.

So while I still think it's wrong for GM, Fiat/Chrysler, Toyota, and Nissan to not invest the effort into keeping top crash safety, I do understand why they don't care. As long as it doesn't affect sales, fixing it has no return on investment. Yay capitalism. (To paraphrase Winston Churchill, capitalism is the worst economic system, except for all of the others. )

Notice and you can confirm this at their site, no Regular Cab info - at least for 2015 / 2016 F 150, Sierra, and Ram.

They included them when they made the promise to test all configurations there after.

Which makes the second back up they did with all this.

    Really want that for here.

Odd thing perhaps .... or else I'm not remembering correctly, they did @ one time have some of that.

    I'm going to go look.
